Hi I am new in this forum and I wanted to say hi. Also I wanted to ask a question to all of you, I am a little embarrassed about it because you all seem like very experimented but here it goes. Well I have been playing for about 10 years now but I have never until resently being curious about getting a new cue(I only have one that my father geve to me few years ago for my birth day and I dont want to wear her out), I have being looking around the net(because I have no cue store near me,I live in mexico) for a good looking, good playing cue but never knew this sport was so expensive. I only have a budget of 600 us and have been looking to vikings, predators, macdermotts, meucci, schon, pechauer, espiritu but there are so many brands and cue makers that now I am really confused and dont know what to get, so Could you please give me a hand and tell me in what direction to look, I know 600 isnt much but what are my best options and what should I look for in a cue.

Thank You

Welcome Rodrigo, where in Mexico are you located? I spent a couple months there last winter, and the pool tables were pretty tough. :)

I don't know how you can wear out your cue, but if you are looking for a good production cue, Joss is pretty tough to beat. Anything you spend over a couple hundred dollars in a production cue is pretty much just dressing it up, so your budget is plenty.

I don't know how available reapirs are in your area, but I would recommend buying some spare tips and a few tools or a kit to do your own tips if you don't have someone local.

Welcome !

You can't go wrong with a Joss, they offer good quality with a decent price tag. I would recommend Schon and Pechauer as well, both are used by top pros. Schon offers a very solid hit, but they are a little bit more pricey than Joss.

Hi Rodrigo,

Welcome to the forum. I hope you enjoy your time here. I have to agree with everyone about Joss Cues. They are very good for the money. If you are interested in Predator products you could go with a Predator cue or a McDermott cue. McDermott offers cues that come with Predator shafts. Schon is also a great production cue but it is pricey. Peachaur cues are good and Viking cues aren't too bad.

Good luck on your cue quest.
Sarah

Hi and welcome to the forums. I am Kay Higgins CEO of KBP Amatuer 9-Ball tour located in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Vrginia.
My husband plays with a Lambrose and he has been very pleased with it. I play with a Fury which for the price I think is an excellent cue. You have to take a lot into consideration with cues. I, personally, don't like the fittings that screw straight into the wood. I've had a cue in the past that the wood stripped out and it was of no use to me. I like the true lock design. Seems to have a better feel for me. You probaly need to find a place that has a variety of cues and a way you can test them out. Most of mine is just experience and that just comes with time and play. Also check with other players in your area and see who's got what and maybe you can try some of their cues. Joss is a great cue and we've had several of them. I may still have one. Once you start collecting, oh boy!!
Good luck in your venture.

Hola Rodrigo! Welcome aboard! I have "family" in Los Reyes La Paz en el D.F. whom I plan to visit this December. I guess they're what you would call "chilangos". LOL

Anyway, the suggestions you've received so far are good and you may also want to check Billiard Warehouse for all types of cues and supplies. They're a reliable site.

If you have to order online and the online store doesn't do international deliveries, you can do it through American Goodies. They can order whatever it is you want and get it to you within 3-4 weeks. Good luck y al rato... :)

"Chilango" is a word used in northern Mexico referring to the people of the capital, but what exactly does it mean? Linda Nyquist says: "Chilango refers to the people of the Federal District, and though it is a term widely used, there is an element of pejoratism in it. Non-DF residents view the capitalinos as "different" than other Mexicans; more aggressive, less honest, more manipulative, etc". José Medina of Chihuahua gives it a broader meaning: "Any one coming from a place further south than Escalon, can be deemed a Chilango" Escalon is a small town, the last station in Chihuahua on the line to Mexico City. This means that, for the the people of Chihuahua, most Mexicans except those from Chihuhua, Sonora and Coahuila are Chilangos.

Just thought I would save folks from looking it up ;)

Welcome to the board Rodrigo. The suggestions above about cues are right on. I would add that Dave Jacoby can make you a cue to fit your personal needs such as type of wrap, length of cue, etc all within your budget. Getting cue maintenace tools and supplies is a very good idea too.

Welcome to the board .If u'r looking to spend that knid of money on a cue i'll go with some thing custom.there are a lot of good cue makers on this forum .Mike Webb Bludworth bryan of BCM Cues . And to All the good people that i have not put up cause i can't rember them all .Just look for some thing that u realy want and going to love when u have in your hands..happy hunting.. :D

Thank for all your sugestions.
highsea: hi I am in queretaro its a state north of mexico city. About my cue its more because of sentimental reasons that I want to preserve in the best shape my cue, she have a wood to wood joint with a wood pin and I dont want to break it. As I told you my father gave her to me in one of my birth days.

sarahrousey: thanks for your sugestions Ill look into them and come back to see if my selection was a good one. I have already had my eye in a Peachaur and a predator but Ill look for the joss.

KBP:Nice site ,very interesting here we only have very little short tournaments but I have seen very good players, unfourtunatly here we dont have a lot of women playing there are only 1 or 2. I would love that my girlfriend could play but she its to little (about 150cm) and she is not confortable with any cue.

9 Ball Girl: I just went there, well I went to Texcoco, I went to pick up my new puppy (an airedale :D ). Thanks for the links.

Wally in Cincy: I guess both your definitions are correct but here in mexico the right one would be the first, the people of the D.F. its a chilango and it does have a despective element in it because they are "more aggressive, less honest, more manipulative, etc"than the rest of mexicans, that city its very stressful. You can always tell who is a chilango and who is not by the way they drive :D .

Well thank you for all your sugestions if you have more please share with me your experience. I will continue my search Ill look at the joss cues and come back to see what you think.

As I asked Rickw where can I see their work and where can I buy it.
Also what should I look or ask in a custom cue?
Thank you

Some internet sites offer only a choice of cue weight, while others offer options like shaft size, joint type, option of Predator shaft, extra shaft, tip, etc.

Also some cues come with a removable weight bolt so you can change the weight at a latter time.

Check out the manufacturers web site before ordering to find out about *all* the options they offer.

These sites offer many options, at least with viking cues...
