New mini Q for Hard Times - in the NW

Mike and I are running a mini-Q for the Hard Times qualifier. We will run it at Harvey's Billiards in Renton, WA on Sunday the 29th of Jan.

Entries are $250, limited to first 16 paid players, races to 8, IPT rules, double elimination. No green fee, doors open at 8:30 for free practice. Player's meeting at 9:45, matches start at 10. First place will receive paid entry into Hard Times qualifier, and so will 2nd place if there are 16 entrants. Otherwise, they will get whatever cash there is leftover (100% goes back to the players) to go towards their entry fee at Hard Times, or they can take the cash.

Should be good action - getting the likes of Horsfall, Dan Louie, Geiler, JD, Brady, maybe Cole Dickson, etc. We tried to run 2 - one on Saturday too, but they have league playoffs then. Hope everyone in the NW can come out and either play in it or sweat it.

What a sweetheart! Billyards has offered to make us bracket boards for our tournament. I love the fact that AZBers are always ready to pitch in and help. It truly is a great community for pool lovers. Thanks again and like I said...you are gonna get rewarded when you least expect it....<evil laugh>

Billyards made a beautiful board for us for this tournament and he PM'ed me, wondering the same thing and this is my reply to him:

I am VERY unhappy to say that the tournament was cancelled. We have a bunch of nits around here!!!

We had 4 people signed up and couldn't justify having it. We called John Horsfall - no reply, Brady Gollan - too far to travel, Mike Vidas - not playing pool anymore, ditto with Alan Ima, Simon Pickering - no answer, Woody - no answer, Geiler - thinks he can just pay his $1000 and get in a qualifier for the 2 open tournaments and won't listen to us, Randy Camantigue - out visiting parents-in-law, Raul Abenojar - doesn't want to ruin his sneaking around action - he even dumped at the last tournament and let someone else go ahead for 3rd place so his picture wouldn't be in the paper, Harry Platis - not sure why not, Tim Tweedell - moving. So you can see we tried, but all we got were Danny Louie, Don Wirtaman, JD, and can't remember the 4th person. Even if we had gotten 6 we would have held it, because the room owner would have gotten in and we would have paid the other spot and put someone in, because we were pretty sure whoever won would have given us the $200 back (the difference would just be a donation for a good cause).

I appreciate all your efforts to design the board. I am just frustrated that we were handing these guys a way to fulfill their pool dreams and then they couldn't come through.

Sorry for the derogatory language. I know some people couldn't help it, but I just got disgusted. Like Billyards said, "You can lead a horse to water...". It's just too bad, I really wanted Danny to have a chance.

Typical of pool players. He most likely split with the guy he was dumping to.

There are three guys here who have been doing that for months on a little $10 tourney. Two of them played on the FPT and were banned from the Fury Amatuer tour because they are too good and now rob the locals at the local bar where the locals have little chance of beating them once let alone twice.

It is a shame how low some pool players will stoop - just for a few bucks.

Yeah, he just does not see the big picture...he can win hundreds gambling around here, or he can win thousands with the IPT. Doesn't make sense to me at all.

What is Dan going to do to qualify now? And do you know how he is hitting them? Is he officially done with the restaurant and full-time on pool?

I also have another question for you... a few years ago... maybe around 2000, your husband took a fair jump in his game... any idea what helped him make that jump?

Well, maybe because he met me, lol. I wouldn't marry him unless he quit drinking. It was a way of life to him when he was playing pool or gambling. It took him awhile to believe in himself and go on the natural and feel those nerves kick in and shake like the rest of us, but he is almost playing as good as he did when he was younger. Also, Harry quit gambling up here in Platisville, so he had to go play in the weekly tournaments with the bangers, race to 1 and that sharpened him up some! :p

I'm not sure he actually took a jump though. He beat Kim Davenport when he was Player of the Year, and that was before I even met him 15 years ago. Maybe his wins are more noticeable now with the regional pool papers and internet and everything.

Danny still plays like a champion. I'm not sure what he is going to do. He may wait until the qualifiers for $1000 to get into one event and see how he does then. If things look good, then he will probably try to enter qualifiers for the year 2007. I would think 8ball would favor his game. That and there's no time limit. <j/k> He did sell his restaurant and is the house pro for Parlor Billiards in Bellevue.
