I'm working on a new way to practice, and score my practice. I know it's been covered in various posts, but be kind, I am trying to gel it up into something that makes sense.
Bascially it would be playing the ghost, but keeping score of certain stats. I know it's been covered before, but I think I have a pretty good little score card coming together. I try to make them objective when I can, but it's not always possible.
I will work up a little grid I can just check off things between racks. Stuff like:
Break error (Jumped off table, or direct scratch) counts against my score.
Dry Break. No balls pocketed on break, but doesn't count against score.
Kicked in on Break.
Break position Error. Without getting kicked, I end up within one diamond of top or bottom rail.
Clusters and Stoppers. Things that make the rack un-runnable without heroics.
Unforced Errors / Miss. Didn't get out, no cluster or stopper.
Position Error. Made ball, did not arrive in intended position.
Bank shots. attempted / made. Will generally be associated with a position error or a stopper.
Jump shots. attempted / made. Position error?
Kicks. position error?
Lastly, I will have a column for "saftey errors" because I intend to play the game two ways.
One: "Run out or die" to force focus, and improve offense under pressure.
Two: "Control". Same as playing the ghost with the addition of safety and decision making. Break and take BIH like always. If you have to play a safety it's not a "loss" unless you leave a clearly makeable shot. I know this part will be subjective but it should be a good training tool too.
And these scores are rough, but something like:
run out: 6 points
miss: 7 points
safety: 4 points.
Of course I could always make different levels of safety. LOCK gets you 5, easy one railer gets you 3, maybe long thin flyer get 4.
You get the idea, a way to practice HARD, offense, defense, control of the table and decision making.
I should also be able to get good stats on my game on different equiptment. What % I get out in 9B vs 10B, 8' vs 9', and how effective my break is from different spots.
What do you think????
