New Room In Greensboro, NC

I am opening a Pool Hall in Greensboro, NC. I am shooting to open around the middle of July. I would like opinions on a few points:

We are considering including a snooker table. There are none in the immeadiate area, how well do you think it will do? Would you recommend 10' or 12'?

We are also considering a billiards table. Same question about interest. Is it important to be a heated table? I don't play carom billiards.

We will have foosball, any recommendations here?

How much space should we reserve for the Pro Shop (sales, not repairs)?

Any other words of wisdom (except; What are you crazy?)?

I reccommend having some larger than average weekly tournaments. If you can get enough players, which NC has plenty of them, then they will all start showing up for a weekly added tournament.

If you have Snooker make it a 6x12. This is the traditional and accepted size for Snooker & Golf. May be a good move for you.
Keep away from the 3 cushion unless you have a good amount of player in your area. If so ,you should have a minimum of 3 tables to accomodate them.
Foosball is a waste of time , especially in a smaller location . Better off with
Mega Touch,Golden Tee,darts,maybe 1-2 pinball machines.
Food is a must , even if it is just simple finger food make sure you have it.
Pro shop is a must also, keep it simple with custom ordering available.

LEAGUES , TOURNAMENTS , LESSONS , INTEGRITY (ESSENTIAL)

Why do you want to do this at all. Snooker and 3 cushion billiards are for very serious players. Now if your going to have a jukebox turned up loud like all poolrooms today then save your money and put in coin tables. No one is going to play snooker or 3 cushion billiards in this type of noisy atmosphere. You have to put those type of tables in a quite room without speakers in it. You can take that to the bank.....

Personally, I wouldn't even consider a snooker or billiards table, with the amount of square footage you have.
I would think about a small kitchen before you devote the space to a billiards or snooker table.
I have 10,000 feet here in southern cal., and I tried two snooker tables and both were empty on Fri. and Sat. nites.
As far as a pro shop, you can put a cue rack behind the bar, and accessories in a case at the counter. That's what I have. Retail is not what it used to be in pool.

How about the floors? Padding of some sort is nice after a few hours at the table. What about ceiling height? If there is room, and you're going to allow smoking, PLEASE think about ventilation.. especially during the summers when you just can't open the door. Ceiling fans work well, as long as they are not too close to the floor.. nobody wants to worry about putting their stick in a fan that's 10 feet from the floor.

10" snooker it is not snooker..

12 or nothing!

U can try put snoker marks on the 9" pool tabel...

I tried, my break 87 points...lots of fun! :)

On real one (12") my record 37.

We have two 3-Cushion tables (one serves as a coat rack) and one snooker table. I have more people play on the snooker table because they are unaware it is a snooker table. They just get frustrated trying to fit all the normal size balls in the snooker rack. I have the extra room because our retail accounts for 92% of our income. If you are depending on this for income I would suggest a 3 Cushion table over the snooker. Foosball will pay for itself fairly quickly. Keep it cheap like 75cents a game. When you figure per square foot, pool will usually lose money. This will be offset by people buying retail goods, snacks, food, drinks, and alcohol. If your pool is paying the rent you should be jumping for joy. Everything else will take care of itself then. I also suggest those little 25cent bulk vending machines. You fill them up once every couple weeks and dont have to deal with it. Give us more info about your stats like square footage etc. You can get better feedback then. Start off as a non-smoking room and you will not have to deal with the difficulties of rebuilding your clientle when a smoking ban hits. You will have a head start on the competition.

Good luck in a difficult business.
