new shaft---schon pilot question??

I am currently playing with a Schon Stl2-S with the stock shaft, however, I plan on upgrading to an OB Classic Pro shaft. My question is, should I just get a 5/16x14 flat faced shaft or do I have to get the shaft with the schon pilot off seyberts? If I can use a flat face, will it affect playability at all with the empty space where the schon pilot usually rests in the butt? Thank you!

Stick to the piloted shaft, there is a reason it was made this way.......also flat joints is for a softer type of joints, not SS joints
If you get the new shaft make sure it fits your cue, there are small differences even among same 5/16 14 pins, the seat is usually were it is different

Get the piloted shaft. It will work/hit better. Some Schon shafts won't fit other 5/16x14 butts, mainly because the shaft pilot on the Schon shafts is a little fatter and the Acme pins are shorter (with shallower inserts), so the Schon shaft won't always seat all the way on other non-Schon butts...but my Schon will take any piloted shaft I've ever tried with zero problem. The "Schon" piloted after market shafts usually indicate "Schon" on the advertisement because it's the same exact diameter with the Schon SS joint, with no overlap or underlap on the joint. Plus they will have the SS ring in the joint trim ring, to match the one on the Schon. Most 5/16x14 joints are so close to each other you really can't feel any difference, so I wouldn't worry.

You don't "have to", but based on experience with both types on my stl-13, I would argue for the Schon-built joint... It fits far better, and the feel is much more like a one-piece cue IMO.

Another example... I recently purchased a Michael Durbin cue with a G-10 pin, and had the same experience again... Mike builds great cues, but of course with stock ~13mm shafts... I bought an OB Pro shaft from OB with their stock 3/8X11 joint, and while it plays decent, a second OB Pro blank was used by Mike to make a matching joint with ring-work for the cue, and the feel and play borders on magical. It is absolutely the best cue/shaft combo I have ever experienced... The OB-jointed shaft is the backup now, and the Durbin-jointed Pro shaft is my player...

It is only my opinion, but based on experience... Get the OB Pro with a Schon-made joint!
 
Coincidentally I just ordered a Schon-piloted OB Classic. These are blanks sent to Schon to be finished by them - everything in the shaft is complete, Schon just inserts their own joint and does whatever finishing is needed in that area. Unlike other 5/16x14 shafts that I've ordered in the past, the regular and even special piloted ones don't make contact with the side of the butt opening at all. I remember my original Schon shafts had some resistance during the last turn or two as the pilot made contact with the opening.

Will this tighter fit make a difference? I don't know, am about to find out for sure. It may promote a more solid fit or feel, not sure. So if you don't mind paying an extra $20 or so for the special piloted joint, and can find one, I would try that.
