New Shaft Technology

I am currently getting back into playing pool after about a 20 year layoff. When I was playing regularly I played as an "A" player. I currently have in my possession a Falcon cue stick which I purchased just before I quit playing. I have been reading alot lately about the more more modern shafts that are available today..i.e. OB..Predator 314-2..Predator Z1, etc. and was wondering if I could just buy one of these shafts and screw it on to butt of my Falcon. Or would it be wise to just buy a new cue ( I kind of prefer a Predator or a Schon) with one of these aforementioned shafts already on it? I don't mind spending the extra money but do you think it is neccessary. Thanks in advance for any input that you can offer.

You could easily buy one of these low deflection shafts and add to your Falcon. I say get back into the swing of things first before buying anything. Falcon is a great cue, and will play similar to a Joss. Once you add a 314, it will feel like a Predator.

Keep the butt. People always underestimate how well the older Falcons were made. Their shafts too.

Welcome back to the game.

Hi welcome back to the game. I think you will be very happy with the low deflection shafts produced today. I had a beautiful 125 plus inlay runde stolen (sad day) and replaced it with a p2 and i have to say Ive never played better! I have been playing for 48 years and there are a lot more good players now. The older players say they were better back when but i think the competition is better now and you have to improve with the times to keep that A player status. good luck

hi shakey,

i made (like you) also a 10 years break-and when i came back to the game there were *suddenly* (lol) laminated shafts, laminated tips etc. I was really surprised a lot about the technical innovations which happened there in the pool-scene.
We both know, that all the champions before the year 2000 were able to shoot some balls, too (really! :p). But some of those laminated shafts make some things just a bit easier-nothin else. They re a bit different for sure. But all in all: with a good fundamentals, spent table-time and a repeatable straight stroke you ll still win with every shaft.
Just do it like you ve done it years ago-- just play- and perhaps test one of those shafts and just see how you feel with it.
It s all about your personal feeling and about what satisfies YOU.
I ve tested almost (almost :p) every laminated or ld-shaft now, just because interested how it is-i read for sure other comments, but at least it has to be my own experience and feeling what would push me to stay with this or that shaft!
lg from overseas,
Ingo

. Stay with your old cue and begin hitting some balls with friends LD shafts. Everybody has them and most people are flattered that you show interest in their cue. Test drive them all. There are also several custom cue makers making LD shafts. Lambros and Mezz come to mind. Welcome back to the green box!
