Hi everyone. For my birthday, my fiancee got me a new stick. I told her about a Nick Varner that I really liked up at the billiard factory. She got it for me today and I absolutely love it. It is perfect for me. But, tonight I was just off. I dont know if it was just a bad night, or if it was because I am not used to the stick. Do you guys recommend anything I could do to get familiar with the stick, so I am not playing like I did tonight again. Thank you very much!

Keep playing with it,you will get used to it,i have picked up cues and played for money or in a tourney when i just got it and it was a big mistake most of the time.

You learn a new stick the same way you get to carnegie hall.....practice! Best method would be to do drills with the cue. Straight in draw diagonal across table, shots down rails, two rail positional drills, etc.

New Cue

Congrats on getting your new dream cue. Now its time to work. Practice..................... A new cue is like a new pair of shoes. You've gotta break em in and get used to em. Be sure the tip is what you want. Cheap change. Does the cue weigh and balance as you like? Some small changes can be made here. Practice...........

I've wanted to mention this on the forum all week. My friend and fellow poster, Steve Lipsky ran 101 on Monday night WITH A HOUSE CUE. I think it's now time to stop blaming cues and to start blaming something legitimate. Next thread should be, "I can't make a ball because my boss yelled at me."

Why is he playing with a house cue?

I got my Roger Pettit cue on a saturday night and I won both my Saturday and sunday night 8-ball tourneys. Probably a fluke. The Pettit plays completely different than the Predator that I was used to. The next two weeks, I struggled until I got used to it. I now have a hard time going back to the predator, probably a good thing.

But everyone else is right...Practice.

Listen to me well Tonto. It is never the arrow, it's always the Indian. I witnessed a man locally known as 'three fingers Ron' walk in to a two day tournament with some of the greatest talent on the planet playing the tournament, pulled off the worst looking piece of lumber from the wall and snapped off the first place cash without losing a set. The balance point is probably the biggest issue with the new cue. You need to commit a few hours a day to get used to the feel of the cue.

Does that mean your going to trade in your P2 for a house cue?

Here's my suggestion: make balls 1inch off the long rail with inside 10x then repeat using outside.
