new table

I am sick of my current table as the rails are dead and it isn't slate. I want to get a new one but I can't spend more than 2K right now for one. I was looking at sears.com and walmart.com at the Mizeraks they have, etc. They have some that are over 2K and some in my price range. Would I still be better off getting a table elsewhere. Is the quality going to be bad from a store like Walmart no matter the price? I was just looking at the convenience factor. It'd be nice to get it delivered to the local store and just pick it up from there. Any recommended tables in my price range or should I start looking around for used ones?

What do you think of a table like this? http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/prod...=Pool+Tables+&+Accessories&BV_UseBVCookie=Yes

Wally world?? Sears?? No thanks.
Look for a used table (newspaper, ebay, etc)
Check locally with any "real" table dealers or pool rooms - they may have some good used tables for sale.

Forget about walmart and the like, total crap. Get a quality used table. Check out craigslist.org for your city. Your newspaper classified section is also a good place to look.

For way less than 2k you can pick up a very nice used table, particularly if you are looking at 8 footer. Every time I look there are always several 8 foot Brunswicks and Oldhausens on Craigslist (not unusual to see a 7 or 9 there also). Seems a lot of people buy table and never use them.

The table I posted was a Beringer Black Champion which seems to have good reviews and be a decent table. What is the difference whether I get it at Wally World or a dealer? I'm not arguing...just asking so I have a good understanding.

edit: also I have to get a table that will fit in my basement which means the top part (the bed?) has to be fairly short so I can't get a big fancy table unfortunately.

If space is a problem, then you first need to decide what size table you should get. Take a look at http://www.easypooltutor.com/article180.html for an explanation of what you need to look at.

The table you posted a link to is an 8 foot table. This is probably the most common size for a home table. As for what is wrong with a table from Walmart or Sears - typically the frame is on the light side which will give you big trouble down the road. The tables just don't stand up under much use. You really need to look at used tables. If you have just a tiny bit of patience you will be able to find a used table that is practically new, that originally cost thousands of dollars more than what you are looking at now, but will cost you half what the sears table will. In short, with a used table you will get twice the table for half the price.

OK, that makes perfect sense. I have very odd size requirements in that the room where the table is going to be is large enough for an 8 footer no problem. However, the odd stair case going down to that room only allows the bed of the table to be a certain height. It actually has to be tilted completely sideways and maneuvered down the stairs so the less height from the legs up, the better. I guess I just need to look around. I might start by going to a place I found in KC that sells pool tables. Amini's galleria just to see what they have. You're right though, I need to be more patient and search through the newspapers, etc and find a decent used one that would fit. It might take a while though and I'm quite impatient. :D

Proline

Buy a Proline table, you can get one in your price range. It will also be brand new! They have a three piece slate so you can get it down in your basement. They make a 7', 8', and 9'.

Look at their website and see if you can get a Proline. It is a great quality table at an affordable price.

Table Height

"However, the odd stair case going down to that room only allows the bed of the table to be a certain height. It actually has to be tilted completely sideways and maneuvered down the stairs so the less height from the legs up, the better."

Don't worry about the height of the table, the legs won't be on the table when it comes down the stairs. Do not try to move the table table down any stairs fully assembled. Get the name of a local mechanic from your local pool room or dealer and ask him some questions. Wolf

I meant with the legs off when I said the bed of the table had to be within a certain height. Of course I wouldn't try to bring a fully assembled table down the stairs. :D The table I have down there now we had to almost completely disassemble to get down there as well as taking the door off the doorway, etc. We actually put some marks in the wall because we had to kind of jam it through so I'm looking for a skinnier table in that regard. This is only a problem because the doorway is set about 4 feet back into the wall, so essentially it has to come in from an angle and that angle is what makes the table have to be a certain height.

I checked the website and it says there isn't one within 1,000 miles of me so I'm assuming it'd cost a fortune in shipping, etc. They do look like nice tables though.

table

You should try Target or Shopko. LOL. Lust kidding. The best thing to do is find a good used table that fits your price range.
Thanx, Ron

I have the same problem: A staircase with dimensions that would likely make it impossible to get any pool table down it.

My solution was to build my own table. It made no sense to buy a used table, spend $400 moving it, and then have to move it again in a couple of years. I would end up spending far more in moving expenses than on the table.

If building your own table is not your thing, start looking at basement windows. You might be able to get the frame in piece by piece that way. Make sure you get a 3-piece slate, so they can be carried down the stairs individually.

Go visit a couple of local dealers, and take a photo of the staircase with you, and see what they have to offer, either new or used. Make sure they disclose all moving and setup fees.

I've never seen this particular table but several manufacturers make a similar model. I'd expect it has partical board skirts and leg assembly. The rails are probably pressboard. All this covered in laminate and 1" unbacked slate. For the money you plan to spend you can surely find something of better quality made of hardwood legs, maple rails, heavy duty frame, etc in a used or possibly a new table. Your coin tho so if you're not up to taking the time to look around then good luck with a Beringer if you choose to get one.

Just about any table, except a bar box, can be broken down to pieces that you shouldn't have trouble toting down to the basement so this shouldn't be a concern. Slate (the top part) is usually 3 piece and 2 people can tote them just about anywhere.

Wallyworld - rare if you think the kid at wallyworld, if you can find one, will have any product knowledge about pool tables. What if you want a different color cloth then what comes with the table? A better ball set? You're not going to get a selection at wallyworld - just what comes with whatever they sell so there's no options. Same same for other big box stores like sears. Even the worst table dealer will probably do a better job with customer service. JMO.

Look for any size table that will fit properly in your room, make sure it is a 3 pc. slate, talk to a professional installer, when broken down it will fit. I bought a nice Gold Crown 3 8'OS for $1500 installed. The guy carried it in my front door, down a hallway, through the kitchen, around a tight ass turn and down the stairs to the basement. When fully broken down, none of the pieces are very big. Good Luck, Wolf

I found this description on another site of a 7' black champion.

* Full 25 Year Warranty
* Solid hardwood construction
* Variety of felt colors based on availability
* Mother of Pearl diamond sights
* 1-inch genuine Bella slate
* Top grade hand-rubbed finish
* 1.25-inch-thick frames
* Solid wood double beam construction
* Financing available including NO PAYMENTS FOR 12 MONTHS
* No press board is EVER used on any Beringer billiard table

I have a tight basement stairwell

And a right turn three steps from the bottom, and i got a nine foot commercial table in there no problem. The big thing is the slate must be in three pieces, and the top rails must be dissasembled. Then the longest piece is maybe a 1x10x110 inch (shorter on an 8 or 7 footer) for the solid side skirts if you are getting a simple commercial table. The bed frame is able to be broken down on many tables, though I wiggled and angled mine down in one piece. If you buy a used table privately, find a good table mechanic, and he will know exactly how to get it down the stairs!

just emailed the manufacturer and got an email back within 5 minutes. That's odd! I expected to be waiting for days, but here are some answers to my questions I had:

1) the skirt and leg assembly material. Plywood and solid wood
construction. NO PRESSBOARDS!
2) The rail material solid wood construction for the top rail with 1.5mm
Arborite laminate backed with 5ply plywood to guarantee against any chance
of future warpage.
3) Is the slate backed or 1" unbacked? 1" Genuine Bella backed slate.

The Black Champion is Not a Beringer table, but a table manufactured by Mr.
Billiard International - This table features high impact laminate over MDF.

Thanks' for your interest.

Again - not knocking the table but saying you could do better for the $ you plan to spend.

MDF is not hardwood.

Oh, I completely understand and really appreciate your input...trust me. I guess what I'm asking is, from what he said, does that sound like a fairly well manufactured table at least? If all else fails and I end up spending too long looking for a used one, this'll be my last resort and I want to make sure that it's at least sturdy. Oh, I also assured it was 3 pc framed/backed slate. See, I don't have to get it from Sears either...I found their website where they ship for free if you pay for a professional install.
