Hi gang,
I'm new to 14.1, and AzBilliards, for that matter. I've been on a pool hiatus for a number of years and recently have made time to get back on a table. I mostly play snooker, but a few weeks ago I decided to have a go at some 14.1 and have really been enjoying it. My wife and I recently re-located, so I've found a convenient hall to play in, but no playing partners, as yet. 14.1 strikes me as a great game to play alone, until I can make some acquaintances. I haven't made any runs of note, but I am enjoying watching videos and reading the knowledge here. I used to play rotational games regularly, so it will be good to undertake a new challenge.

Hey there and welcome to the AZ 14.1 community, I dont think you will find a more knowledgeable group of people on this subject anywhere.

If you have any questions please feel free to get in touch and enjoy everything we have to offer you here.

Welcome

DeHouser - welcome to the forum and to straight pool as well. Be prepared
to use your noodle a lot more than you did in rotational games. Since offensive
and defensive strategy is such a big part of the game - and it sounds like you don't
have anyone to learn from, it may be a good idea to invest in a few DVD's and study
the strategy of the masters. My faves for strategy are Rempe and Souquet. Good luck
and keep hittin em!

you are very welcome. Snooker is a tough game, as well as straight pool. And Falcon is a nice playing piece of wood, that's my second and only playing cue ;)
On a side note, you might be interested watching the video classes by Pat Fleming, the founder of Accu-Stats Productions. They are $5 per session (1 hour) and sure are worth much more! They are live on Thursdays but also available archived. Great deal if you would like to learn more about the game.

Welcome to the 14.1 Forum.
Great advise by Vahmurka. Watching Pat's classes are the way to go at it.

A nice welcome, so thanks to all. I will definitely have a look at Pat's lessons. I've also read Dana's multi-year goal of making the point equivalent of his age, which I thought was a neat way to stay motivated. I am not able to put in nearly as much time on a table as I'd like, so I'll have to content myself with making practice count when I can get it. I put in a few hours on Wednesday evening, and had a high run of 18, a 9 and two 7s, so this will give everyone an idea of where I'm at in the game (i.e., beginner). I can often pot myself out of trouble, but choosing/leaving a break ball is tricky. It seems to me that the players I've watched on tape, such as Crane, Mosconi, Ortmann, Schmidt, etc, all appear to decide at different times which ball they'll want to use for the break. I guess this is the organic nature of 14.1, it is constantly changing, and seems to reward the players who are most sensitive to this. Anyway, I hope to get some more practice in tomorrow afternoon.
