Getting Better
Silver Member
I am in need of some help here. I am new to the game and starting to get better. The local beast of the pool room as began to take notice and started offering up lots of weight. However he is racking the balls in a weird way that doesnt seem to let me make any balls on the break. They really dont even spread out well. What is the secret. The balls look tight and he told me " I have a rack for you." This all happened after I beat him getting the 6 out playing 10 ball. Any help would be awesome.

By the way. I am still getting the same spot.

If you think he is racking you ask for the same spot with each player racking their own balls. You can still check his rack to make sure he isn't giving himself an advantage.

I am assuming you are talking about a 10 ball rack?

If so, it is harder to make a ball on the break in ten ball then 9 ball, due to the geometry of the rack. You really have to hit a ten ball rack solid and square to have a chance to make a ball. Where the wing balls of a 9 ball rack are wired to the back corners, there is no such animal in the 10 ball rack.

As another poster said you can always ask for rack your own.

Look for

1. all balls frozen
2. Rack is not tilted one way or the other.
3. Head ball not too high on the spot.

You may want to put in some time, when not playing him on practicing your break.

Odd rack

If the rack looks tight but you sense there's something up....check the connection between the head ball and the two balls behind it. The rack can look tight but if the head hall has a slight amount of separation on either of the two balls behind it, you can loose 10-20% of your power at contact.

You might have better luck asking your question in the Ask The Gambler section.

How much do you offer as a gapper for the person who gives you the right answer? $50? $100? More?

It's got to be worth something to you, right?

If/when you're absolutely sure he's racked them that way again, tell him to go ahead and break that game, and watch how he breaks and how the balls spread.

Believe it or not I have a lot more success breaking ten ball then I do nine ball. The rack is a nine ball rack and it is something some one showed him to hide money balls. But it just seems a little fishy. Thanks for all the help though.

easy answer RACK YOUR oWN when its your break
opponent gets to check and critizize

Well you don't expect him to put the money balls on the wings do you?:p That would be stealing.

If you think about it, there are only a few places left where you would put them.

Since we now know this is a 9 ball rack look for gaps between the 9 ball and the second row. Gaps there will keep you from getting a good spread.

Getting a good spread, and pocketing a ball in a 9 ball rack is more of a function of the rack, and not the quality of the break shot.

Why don't you give us a clearer picture of how you are breaking?

I break from straight ahead. I seem to slide of the side of the one when I break from the side. I tried a soft break and the balls didn't go anywhere. I told him he is scared. Lol. He is a 25 year vet and has to rack me to beat me on the spot he offered.

As you move the cueball further from the center towards the long rails on either side, you increase the chances of making a wing ball on the break. To make a ball from the center of the table as you describe, requires you to hit the rack very hard, and square.Even then, there are no guarantees that you will make a ball from that position.

Work on moving the cue ball more to the side rail and hitting the one square. Take some speed off of your break shot until you mastered hitting the one square, then start to add more speed.

Best advise

Look for better action. Play someone else. Someone with less bumb in him.

There are no secrets IMHO the balls have to be loose somewhere and you have several options:

1) Get a Sardo tight rack show up with it and say “I got this just for you; it will keep everybody honest”
2) Inspect the rack much more closely most people only check the connection between the head ball and the two balls behind it; look specifically for any “finger spin” of the center ball no matter what game you are playing with him. If he is spinning the money ball with his fingers tell him not to do that. If the money ball is loose in there tell him to tighten it up.
3) Tell him that you are going to start “slug racking him right back” and ask him “do you want to play pool; or get into a slug racking battle?”
4) Tell him that putting “the rack” on someone is not something to be proud of and that there are 2 kinds of people that do it the uninitiated and the A$$____; no great pool players “rack” each other.

Although I like your attitude and would love to second all you're saying here, it's wishful thinking that top players don't do this. Some pros are phenomenal at slug-racking - of course I won't name any names here.
