I've seen this cue before. It's been around a while. Liked it then, like it now. Very nice. Tony's cues are very well made. You'll probably like the way it hits/plays. Some say his cues are a bit "harsh" in the hit department but I don't find them to be that way. Congrats on your new weapon.

I saw the e-bay auction and recognized it from the Proficient site. A very nice cue that I am sure anyone who is after a BB (including myself) would love to have.
Great find and hope you enjoy it. Please let us know what you think of it after it arrives.

I will let you know what I think when it arrives. I had seen it on Proficient before but never guessed that I would own it. I am bouncing off the walls! I have played with several BB's before and the hit matched my style of play so well that my accuracy went up a notch. My Richard Blacks (4 total, I know own 1) have all had a softer hit that imparts a great deal of action on the cueball, but I think I match better with a stiff hit. Let's see!

Actually, maybe someone can help me... I am looking for someone that has an old billiards magazine from the 1990's that has the original Black Boar ad in it... the one that has the violin and all the cues lined up in front of it. If someone has it, I would love to get a scan of that image. If you have it, please PM me and I will send you my e-mail address...

I was playing regularly with a Coker or a Bender depending on where I was playing. Both of course are wood-wood joints. I picked up a Tascarella a couple of weeks ago (from Quality Cues) and the hit of the shaft with the steel joint is incredible. I understand that the Black Boar has that same feel for a hit.

Black Boars are a great cue and I decided to pass on this one being that I have seen another that may become available through an AZB member plus I have someone searching for a new one for me.
If I see the old school come up, I will point it out to you as well.
It is a really beauty - simple old style Black Boar.

My wife, who is not into billiards, told me that my new BB looks like a western cue, with sheriff stars on it. She said it looks like it was made for the Lone Ranger! I told her to stop it before I cried! hahaha! She also asked me why I need more than one fancy cue... This girl just doesn't get IT.

Non-pool playing wives never understand...I just gave up and told my wife it's just a hobby and let me get out on occasion and I will let her go shopping as well. I am honest with her though about the cost of every cue I own...she deserves to know.

My God! I have to be honest! My wife would know if I lied to her! Puerto Rican women are tough! I do the same thing you do, Shorty. I send my wife to the salon and out shopping and she occasionally lets me out of the house to bang the balls around.

My cue has been shipped and is in transit. I am really excited, but don't think it will get here before Thanksgiving. I am hoping it arrives Friday, because my wife will surely let me play that night.

Ok! I got the Black Boar last night. It is a model AS-8 according to macguy.

The cue has had minimal use and looks brand new, like it was shipped directly to me from Tony's shop. According to the Blue Book, it had to have been made before 1995, so it is over 10 years old. But it just looks new. I am so happy.

Went and hit balls for an hour and the stiff hit is quite different from the Richard Black cues I have used since 1990. I think that harder hit actually improved my shot making and fits my shooting style much better. I am excited to get back into serious pool and I think this is the exact tool I needed.

Oh, and if I try to value the cue according to the Blue Book... this cue has 12 separate inlays (8 stars and 4 windows)... and a leather wrap (flawless too) so I think I came up with $1450 as the value ($1300 +150 for the wrap). I happily paid $2000 on ebay... and think the $1450 number is a crock of crap. Anybody else agree with that or did I overpay (not that it matters to me!)?

Overpay?

Anybody who thinks 2K is too much for that stick ought to check out those Japanese sites selling the new BB's. If it's as nice as you say it is a bargain.
Enjoy!

Thanks! I am enjoying it (I can hardly keep my mind on work!). And I agree about the pricing! I actually had set my Esnipe to $2700 to make sure I got the cue.

But now my question is... why does this cue not price-out correctly in the Blue Book... I am also wondering why the Black Boar section does not have black and white photos of the AS-1 through AS-10 models, showing Tony's first offering of cues. It seems like a silly omission to me.

I would say the Blue Book should be used as a guide and not solid reference. We all know the prices are wacky in there, some too high, some too low. In the end, a cue is worth what you pay for it. You seem to be enjoying the heck out of your Black Boar purchase, so be happy with it and don't let the 'silly' stuff bum you out. I personally think that in any hobby, you should buy what you like, not what's assumed to be trendy or hot at the moment.

Chef:

I could not agree more and am not sweating the value or money at all. I wanted a BB cue forever and finally got one and it turned out to be in fantastic condition.

I just wanted to express dismay over what I percieve to be some pricing problems with the Blue Book.

I have never been one to go with the trends and actually don't particularly like cues from some of the trendier guys. Though some would say that Black Boar is one of the fairly trendy marks right now....

I am content with my two good cues and will not be buying another cue until my number comes up with SouthWest Cues. I have been waiting for... 4 years now, so maybe 3 left to go. After that I will have another 3 before my Hercek order pops to the top.

That's a sweet cue. I've always liked Black Boars and hope to eventually have one.
