In Rodney's match vs Luc Salvas, Rodney was freestroking and just breaking and running out consistently. In one of his last racks, he was faced with this shot after making the 1 on the break:

He got shape on the 3 by doing:

He didn't have enough angle to stun the cueball over for position on the 3, so basically the shot he took was the only way to get to the 3, but it was very risky as he narrowly missed colliding with the 7. It worked out perfectly, however, and he ran out the rack. I just thought it was a nice shot, and very gutsy. I'm used to seeing the pros play more conservative, but Rodney is Rodney :cool:

Man what a shot! I would of had to follow the tangent with some bottom right and just spin it off the rail for shape...much more conservative I know...but dang! Going the opposite way and to miss the 7, that's friggin impressive! I would of had to change my drawers after seeing that LOL

I guess my (ignorant?) question is why wouldn't you do what Shorty says? I would. That way the cue is moving into the shape zone instead of across it, making speed control easier. Maybe the WEI is not quite right and this way was not an option? :confused:

I don't think it's an ignorant question. The way the layout shows it, that would be the easiest and safest way to get on the 3....but then, I don't shoot quite as well as Mr. Morris, so who am I to question his strategy?

The WEI must be wrong. Why would anyone chose that option over tangent line, straight draw, or playing one rail to the middle of the table especially with tight pockets?

The shot must have been a little straighter. And he must have had extreme confidence in his distance control.

Ohhh, I'm not questioning his strategy either, at least not challenging the wisdom of it. I am just trying to learn from it, if possible.
 
I agree with you guys. It looks like it was a very nice shot, but the way the WEI has it diagramed, it just doesn't make any sense to shoot it that way. But I'm not a pro. JMO.

The original post suggested that there was not enough angle to stun it that far. Using oodles of top will add a lot of speed to the CB, and that, assisted by the siding (running on all three rails), may have been the only way to get the CB to travel many feet. At least that's how I read the scenario. Having said that, the shot played would also require a very powerful stroke. This shot forever fools me by coming up short, I gotta hit it a lot harder than I think is necessary. I think it's shot #9 (or so) in the Pro Book (I know, I'm supposed to know the numbers, still practicing).

Note that position on this shot is across the line, not down the line.

Agreed, the shot was incredible and it was for the win if I remember correctly.

The WEI table doesn't quite have the setup perfect, but suffice it to say that his only other option was to play safe on the 2 -- there was no other way to get onto the next ball because it was blocked on several fronts. The WEI table actually makes it look easier, because there was also a blocking ball mid-table -- if the cue ball had stopped even just 6 inches shy of where it did, he would have been blocked on the next shot. Luckily he landed perfect and the rest is history.
