Darren Appleton recently took note that a few Europeans made their Derby City debut a couple of weeks ago. Some were quite successful, such as Ruslan Chinakhov, who came 4th in the nine ball event.
Still, the guy who seemed like a kid in a candy store was Nick Vandenberg, the guy who many will remember as having sunk the winning ball in the 2012 Mosconi Cup.
At the Derby, Nick reached Round 6 in the banks, Round 8 in the one pocket, Round 5 in the 9-ball, and he won the midnight mini in 9-ball. He also ran 99 balls in the 14.1 challenge, narrowly missing Stage 2. He sure did play a lot of pool and he played it rather well.
I caught up with Nick several times during the Derby, and he sure was having a great time, as if he'd made a unique and wonderful discovery. Indeed he had.
.... and now, Nick Vandenberg has just won the Treviso Italian Open on the Eurotour. Congratulations to him.
