Nick Varner update

I just spoke with Nick's brother, Steve. He says Nick's doctors are pleased with his progress. He had the bypass procedure done on his legs and is now in intensive care but should be out of there shortly. They are guarding against pneumonia or blood clots of course but Nick should make a complete recovery. They have been bombarded with phone calls and so they'd like to try to just keep everyone informed through the newsgroups.

The last time I heard you quit smoking. Did you? Has it helped your game? When I met you the first time in Kalamazoo you were puffing away. Maybe you convince Nick to do that too.

Grady,

My dad has had 3 different bipass surgeries (1984, 1999 and 2003). He went through a bit of depression each time following the surgeries and this is a normal post-op condition. I'm sure the Dr will tell Nick the same thing but probably not everyone that knows him will be aware of that. One of the best things to guard against depression is involvement in activities. As soon as he's able, family and friends should try to engage him in some of the things he likes to do. It will probably be a while before he'll be able to shoot but maybe he has some other interests that would be more amenable to his ability to participate in? Just a suggestion from one who has been through this several times. Good luck Nick and God Bless! Can't wait to see you shooting those balls like the champion you are!

Grady,

Rickw is giving some very sound advice here. My father had the same surgery and it went very well. We were all excited about the success of the procedure. What we were not prepared for was the depression that came about a week or so after the surgery. Make sure Nick is as active as he can be at all times after the surgery. He will need his good friends at that time, more than he has any other time in his life. God bless Nick and his family!
