Nip type shot - hold tip of cue to shoot?

Sounds legal, so long as you don't let go of the cue when it's on the table.
 
A friend told me you can use just your shaft (unscrew your shaft) to do some of the above shots.

That would be illegal as a cue must be 40" in length. ~edit~or more of course

I used this in an 8 ball tourney in Las Vegas once and my
opponent's jaw dropped to the floor. It was witnessed by
a qualified referee and he called a good hit. Went on to
win the tourney.

This seems like an interesting alternative which I will try today.

One question though. If you got too far over and the side if the ferrule hit the ball as you were stroking, would that be a foul?
