No FAQ after search, little help would be appreciated, first ever post!

Hello guys and gals,
Been playing pool for a few years, but only recently have I been playing in APA and am looking to step my game up a notch.

Coming as a moderator from other discussion boards, I went to the search and didn't find any pool faq's out there, so I thought I would put a thread together.

First off, if after these questions someone has an instant messenger that can answer most of what I ask, I would definitely appreciate it to save people some trouble posting.

So on to the questions:

1. I play on a 8 foot Olhausen table at home. Those of you who have played on a table like this, it plays well, but cloth is of course much slower than what we play on at league on 9 footers and fast cloth. When I go to practice, will my game benefit by practicing on the slower 8 footer? I know my position will be much different after shots, but is practice and any drills out there beneficial on my home table, or should I practice only on the 9 footers?

2. Any opinions on getting a pool instructor vs reading books? I have no problems buying a few books or watching a couple dvds and following them, but I just wanted input on if any of you recommended skipping that and get some lessons instead.

3. Cue construction: Is there a way to test for cue deflection at home, or does it require a machine to be effective.

4. What kind of difference do you notice by changing ferrules, comparing like a saber t to a stock ob-1 ferrule for example. Does one work better for some than others? Performance wise, do most ferrules play pretty similiar, and mainly just feel different?

5. IF you could buy a few tools to take care of your shafts, tips, ferrules, butt, etc what would they be? I have a 2x2 case that has some room for a few tools to keep my stick in good shape.

6. If using the Olhausen 8 footer I have is ok for some drills, is there any decent sites out there with effective drills?

I think that is more than plenty for my first post, and appreciate in advance any advice you all can give!

You should check out this thread - it's right on! Reply and bump it back to the first page: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=52058

Regarding books, if are the kind of person who can learn from books, by all means buy a few. Capelle, Byrne, Ray Martin - there are lots of books to choose from.

Lessons from someone with a proven track record might save you some time. I stress the proven track record because I know a guy who gives lessons. What he does is photocopy pages from pool books and present them to students as lessons. Anybody could do that. As for me, I'd like a teacher who has pro-level experience. JMO

The easiest way I've found to search this site is to go to advanced search, type in a keyword(s) in the left box and then on the lower right pick a particular forum. The answers you're looking for will all be in the main forum.

Fast replies, thanks! I will try that search technique.

I will also try and ask around to some of the good players to see if they know a pro who is worth getting, instead of someone who just copies others materials.

Just because someone is a great player, it doesn't mean they're a good teacher and not all great teachers are good players. ;)

There are some pro's that are pretty good teachers but very few of them take lessons or are coached by other players.

If you're serious about lessons, there are a number of well known, well respected teachers on this forum. A good place to start is your location or your willingness to travel. A search on teachers should provide you with many threads on the different experiences people on this forum have had with different teachers.

Search is on for a good teacher then :)

Anyone want to reply on my practicing and doing drills on the 8 foot Olhausen, vs the 9 footers at the pool hall. What kind of drills would be effective to use in this situation, if any?

Here's another recent thread for drills: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=51889

I practice on a slow 8 footer. I spend most of my time on shotmaking. The drills that concentrate on touch may not be directly transferable to the big, faster tables, but they do encourage me to employ degrees of force, rather than just the old standbys hard and soft. I also practice on 9 footers a couple times a week, but the 8 footer's free, so I hit that nearly every day.

One good thing about pool tables is that regardless of size, they are all twice as long as they are wide. This keeps angles the same. The cloth you have may slow down the balls a bit, but I have found that even tables with the same cloth will play slightly different. Any time you get on a new table, you need to make minor adjustments in your speed to adjust to the individual table.
As for instructors, if you care to share your location, we can probably better help you find someone well qualified to help in your quest for pool knowledge.

Thanks for the drills thread, it looks like these will help!

As far as teachers go pooltchr, I am in Richmond, VA. Not far from Charlotte :)

Maybe I can take a trip to Charlotte, if you could help my game heh. Although I am sure there are some people in Richmond, so if you know of any I would appreciate it.

I would be happy to talk with you and see if we can schedule something for you in Charlotte. Scott Lee also travels a lot, giving lessons around the country. If you can't make it to Charlotte, send him a note and see when he plans on being in Virginia again.
Either one of us can offer lessons that are guaranteed to help your game.

pooltchr, maybe it would be good if I got a couple of my APA league members to come with me to make the trip worthwhile. Do you prefer individual teaching, or is gruop ok?

Thought we could make the best of a 5 hour trip.

In the meantime, if there are any Richmond teachers worth checking out, I would be grateful for the contact info.
