Non-Smoking Pool Halls or Tournaments???

Non Smoking is the future

Despite all the whining for the "good ole days" where you couldnt see the other side of the room because of smoke...non smoking pool rooms will be the future I think. Every night I have smokeeaters going, fans on, a ventilation fan, and sometimes even the front door open to reduce smoke. I still get numerous requests for non-smoking areas or complaints about the smoke. I cannot EVER remember someone coming up to me and saying..."Gee, I sure wish you guys had a lot more cigarette smoke in here..the air is just way too clean for me!"

When I go to the BCA shows and talk to other room owners about this issue they all say the same things. First they are terrrified about a law banning smoking because so many of their customers smoke. Second, every room owner that operates in a state where it was passed said it was the best thing for thier business. They admit there was a difficult adjustment period, but now are busier than ever. Poor management and being stuck in the past with business planning and not wanting to evolve is what puts pool rooms out of business. The smokers in the USA account for 20.9% of our population. Catering to such a small minority is a dangerous business plan. Common sense says you should cater to the 79.1% of NON-smokers.

I know for a fact that many customers have left my business because of excess smoke. They told me so. I can't imagine how many never came back because of smoke but DIDN'T tell me. I can only assume it was a LOT higher. :( Most people dont say a word. Times change people. If you want your local pool hall to survive, support the changes. Like the old saying...You are either part of the problem or part of the solution. Which are you?

The smoking ban here in Az will be going into effect in a couple of months. There is a suburb of Phoenix that banned smoking a while back, and I love to go up there to play. I can't wait for it here, no smoke in the eyes, no ashes on the tables, and when I get home I can actually leave my clothing in the house. I do know of a few poolhalls that have suffered due to smoking bans, but they were all either within a few miles of a Native American casino (where the ban doesn't apply), or a few miles from a poolhall outside of the ban area. Most places I know of have actually seen increased business post smoking ban. My wife and her friends all stopped playing when two of them quit smoking a couple of years ago. They told me that they are going to start playing again and start another league team as soon as the ban takes effect here.

Lucky you...I think that Missouri is number 3 in the nation for % of smokers. I think we will be one of the last to ban smoking. Probably after we are number one in cancer deaths...then everyone will be shocked! lol..

Enjoy clean air in AZ.....I will stay here and cough....

You confuse me

You tell people to take advantage of the overwhelming amount of non-smokers nationwide to improve or save their business and that it is not the no smoking but bad management that is the problem. I am curious, since you yourself complain about the smoke so much why do you not just run a non-smoking establishment? According to you, it should improve your business dramatically. Also since you are popular, your regular customers won't mind stepping outside. Plus you will get a head start when they do ban smoking.

Thank goodness my state hasn't yet been taken over by Nazi's that rule weather or not my pool room can be smoking or not. If that ever happens, I will make my room a private club and allow it anyway. Non-smoking laws are putting a lot of pool rooms out of business. What ever happened to good ole Willy Nelson songs about smoky old pools rooms and clear mountain mornings.
Well you can call them Nazi's if you like but the bottom line is they are banning it for a reason. SMOKING AND SECOND HAND SMOKE has been proven dangerous to the health of you and the people YOU choose to smoke around who do not want to be at risk. Yes you should get to smoke as long as your smoking does not affect anyone but you. Last I checked that is not possible.........Sorry

Add Arizona to the list of non smoking states......I could not be happier.

I do believe that. But I am in a family business. In order for families to get along they have to agree on a direction in the business. I am alone in my opinion and other in my family fear the unknown, hence we are keeping our smoking policy for now. We currently have no smoking in our retail area and have enough issues keeping customers from lighting up. It will come in time. Our billiard parlor accounts for 9% of our income yearly. We try and concentrate our efforts mostly on the other 91% of our business. Sorry for the confusion.
