OK i know people haate when we bring up earl strickland.. but i have to ask and i would like an honest answer. I thought htis weould be the best place to post it..

Why does he wear weights all over? he has them on his elbow, top part of his arms and i belave he wears a waist one as well. I know he works out alot cuz he is up at 4 in the am working out befor matches in tourneys.. Does he just forget to take them off after his workout? haha there has to be something behind it. i mean he beats the pants off of people and hes got all this gear that would annoy the crap outo f anyone...

My guess is that he feels he plays better with the gear.
Some may suggest it is a sign that he has lost a measure of confidence in his "unaided" ability to play the game at the highest level. I tend to believe he has convinced himself that he needs the gear to play at his top speed.

i found a u tube vid were he talkes about it but it cut out or someting or my computer at work sux. he said it keeps him in line and down on the cue and then he talked more one it and then it stopped so i was just wondering if anyone on here new the real reason. i do think he may just need it but i tired to play with weights on my arms an sstuff that shit is crazzy hard.

I can't find the interview right now, but I seem to recall him saying he wears them in between matches to keep his muscles from getting cold.

Makes sense...
I guess...

Over focused on micro distractions.

Asked him about it when he and J Schmidt came to town. He said that it helps him say down and smooths out his stroke.

I have noticed that sometimes when I get over focused on a drill I will begin to fixate on micro motions in my stroke and before too long I begin to tense up and miss shots that would be 10 out of 10 any other day.

When this starts to happen I usually begin a free shooting practice like Bowliards. Moving the rock around the table and changing my body position and the variety of shots usually helps me to get back in to stroke. That fixated obsessive over focused drill work can sometimes totally screw me up.

Geroge Fels (who is awesome!)
in his column Straight Talk in Billiard Digest (may 2012) said
"Surely you recognize that pool demands concentration. The catch 22 is that the game demands way more concentration than you think you're giving it. And you have to accomplish this level of concentration at the same time as maximum physical relaxation."

I think earl uses the weights gloves ect. in a attempt to minimize the many micro distractions that seem to be the object of his ire. I don't know if anyone remembers the interview where he mentions not wanting to feel the stick anymore when speaking about his gloves tape ect. Or the whole earl hates babies thing.

Its tough to find our way home when we are lost.

I'm wondering: Why do you have a picture of Earl choking himself as the photo that you chose to represent you in the forum? Are you obsessed with him?

maybe

i dont know how to explain it. just think he is an awsome pool player. Watched alot of his matches live and day old recorded when i was younger. I Grew up in a bar as i was from a small town in mt. and my mom and dad both worked.. The pool table was my day care, and earl was my hero.. Still is i guess. He is funny and he takes stuff way to seriously. Then he goes crazzy, loses some racks and then BAM! he running racks in a min. flat.. or losing like a boss you know go big or go home. haha

As for the photo, just think its funny pic.

thanks for the infor from the others. i know it looks strange but just maybe he his somthing here. i know he is crazzy s.o.b but most of them are at a way higher IQ then most. I think he knows something we dont... Or maybe he is just crazzy. i think that would make a great poll.

Earl. High IQ or just Crazzy s.o.b... You choose... haha

OK, fair enough. The way I see it is that Earl plays to the tune of his own drum. That's fine, except at some point we all have to figure out how to get along with others, even if it's at a superficial level. We are surrounded by people, and if we go around acting like everyone else is an idiot and we know all the answers, life will be pretty lonely and unhappy.

I don't find Earl funny, nor do I think he's a genius bordering on the line between genius and insanity. I think he is seriously lacking in certain necessary social skills in order to get along and I find that sad.

I think that he believes that wearing all those weights and trying different things is what keeps him ahead of everyone else, which is what he strives for; and if I were you, I'd take that photo down and try to find a role model with interpersonal skills that you can look up to.

Many of the true geniuses are the most humble people.

Most genuises are seriously lacking in social skills. Parts of the brain are more developed whereas other parts are less developed. I have no clue about Earl in particular though.

so your saying i should take down the pic cuz he dosent play well with others. i have the pic cuz i myself think he is funny in the way he beats himslef up. i agree that i do not like how he treats others and he is missing something. but arn't most people with very high IQs like this. MY cousin has a BIG IQ. I MEAN done with college as a 11th grader IQ. i bet if you try and talk to him like i do, he will make no sence and he gets mad over silly things..

I look up to earl as someone i hope to play befor he is 90. i want to be able to beat him in a race to 9 or 100. but if i could play him now an say i had the balls to go up against my childhood hero and beat him or even lose to him dosent matter. Means i am one step closer to my goal of being a pool player.. Not many can say they grew up watching there hero and then beating them at there own game. (i want to say i at least came close) prob wont happen but its a goal i have....

so as for my pic. it is a reminder everyday that i need to get my butt in the pool room and practice.. i do a agee with you that he is a bit crazzy and i am sorry that you cant find some humor in it... There are many pool players like earl and if you cant find them amusing then you will have trouble beating them. he does crazzy crap to get in your head. thats all it is. or thats what i think it is.

idk just my two cents. sorry if i sounded mad or angry at anyone.. I am not. all input is good input.

ok to get back on topic. has anyone tried this crazzy stuff. i have tried the weights and i didnt know the science into it so i didnt get much out of it.. anyone try the baseball glove? i think i golf one would feel a bit better.

He uses them because he's crazy. It's pretty obvious, isn't it? One day he'll play really well with something else that's pretty unconventional and he'll switch to that for a bit.

Absolutely not true about most geniuses seriously lacking social skills.

You like him because he makes you laugh. You like him because you enjoy it when he acts crazy. You like him because he plays great. Your goal is to play him before he's 90. You want to beat him. Posting his photo as your avatar reminds you to get yourself into the pool room to play. That about sums it up, right? Okie dokie.
