I'm sure this is really basic so please pardon my ignorance but just starting. I got Jerry Briesath pool lesson DVD which was eye opening - lots to work on and learn. But here is my question: when you shoot with left or right English does the cue end up following through 3-4 inches parallel to center of cue ball or does it it end up on the cloth on the cue ball center line. For example, I have a a straight in shot and have placed a reinforcement on the table in front of cue ball ball to practice better follow through on straight shot. Now I want to play same shot with English does the cue end in the cloth left or right of o ring or back in the center of o ring like straight in shot? Thank you for your time.

i am not an instructor:(:o
to me if you are applying spin you are still stroking straight thru the cue ball
so since the spin will thow the ball you will not be aiming at the perfectly straight line
and your cue tip will be off "alittle" from the center of the pocket
i hope im right:D
the instructors will teach you and me:wink:

With Front Hand English, your cue tip will finish parallel to the line of centers. Sould be close to the same distance.

That DVD is a good one. Pay attention to Jerry.

What City do you live in?

Still a little confused - what is front hand English? The other DVD I bought Robert Byrne Power Pool workout - he shows English and the cue coming back to the o ring which looked very different from the way Mark Wilson was shooting. I live 30 minutes north of Boston - is there a good instructor up this way? I did some searching on here but everyone was pretty far away.

There's three ways you can produce side spin.

1. Front hand
2. Back hand
3. Accidentally

Try to find Joe Tucker, he's one of the best.

To answer your question:

If using right english for instance, when following through your tip would be somewhere right of your reinforcement ring, how far right would depend on the method of compensation used (front hand, back hand, etc.). In your example it should never finish directly on the same spot used to check your stroke when shooting on the vertical axis.

To follow up on this, when you shoot with side spin you will be addressing the cue ball on the left or right side. Your final back stroke should come perfectly straight back and the forward stroke should go perfectly straight thorough along that offset line you have chosen. It is not possible to do that and end up with the cue stick on the donut the cue ball was sitting on. You must end up on the same side as the side spin and where you addressed the cue ball.

Some players use a goofy crooked sideways swooping stroke when putting side spin on the cue ball rather than addressing the cue ball where they intend to hit and then hitting it there by simply coming straight through. Unless you have a very, very good reason for doing such a thing, keep your stroke simple.

That is definately all that needs said

Where do you play out of? I'd imagine I'm pretty close to you and am always happy to help someone out if our schedules can match up.

Re

Thanks again for all the insight and glad I am doing it the right way -although most everything else I just have to learn. I am located in Newburyport MA about 30 minutes north of Boston - I think I'll look into fixing my profile so that is listed - would love to play a game if someone is close. Interested in learning all pool games but after hours on the forums I'm most interested in Straight Pool.
