i lost 3 players on my double jeapordy team for this session so i looked for a couole of players to add the last few weeks.

after having no luck i asked my gf's son " gary" and his friend " trez " who happens to live with us. they are both 18. now mg gf and i have been together for 3 years and have a pool table at home. her children have never shown much interest in pool . now in 3 years i dont think gary has played much more than a dozen times and mostly when friends of his come over and want to play. trez has been living with us for 6 months and probably has played 6 times.

we go play sunday night and my best player is running late due to being held up at work. the other team threw their 2 best players 1st. well i decide to dump my 2 new players. their 7 plays gary 8 ball and their 6 plays trez 9 ball. i explain to the other team these 2 kids are new and have not played much at all.

they say no problem. trez is so new he has never played 9 ball and i had to show him how to rack. heck i saw shortly he dont even know how to hold a cue lol.

after giving trez what timeouts i could during the 1st rack his opponent " ricky " took it upon himself to give trez a lesson how to play pool the entire match. every time it was trez;s turn ricky would give trez pointers on how to hold the cue and how to aim. i gotta give ricky a big thunbs up.

well ricky won 19-1 and gary lost his 8 ball 5-0. i did not watch gary shoot as i was keeping 9 ball score.well it gets gary;s turn to play 9 ball and he faces a 4. be damn if gary did not shoot a great game and only lost by 1 point. well my 9 and my other 3 finaly show up.

i cant play my 7/9 due to handicap limit but the other captain said go ahead due to the new players have to start at 4's and they are obviously not 4's. he and i discuss it wu=ith the lo who is also there and he said sure its no problem. a big thun=mbs up to both if them.

well i did not play because it would have put us way over so i just played my 7/9 , the 2 kids and my 2- 3's. oh yea i played my other 4 once in 8 ball.

even though i did not play i really enjoyed the night because i watched some great sportmanship.

also i feel great because it looks like i added some new blood to our sport.

Right on. Helps keep it in perspective... league pool can be a very positive experience.
Hopefully they had a good time and might try joining the league permanently down the road.

This is a great story. Its cool to see people like this.

We have a 9 in our division that is like this. I'm a 7 and he's likely to come talk to me about a shot that I'm thinking a bit long on while I'm playing against him. He is the only guy in our league that I honestly don't mind getting my butt kicked by. He is by no means humble, but hes a fun guy and genuinely wants to get his knowledge out to whoever will take it. Its guys like him that keep me in the APA. I'd like to be that guy as I improve.

Great stuff, lorider.

I love stuff like this. I always try to do what I can when there is a new player in our league, its a good feeling getting them off to a good start.

I remember my first night, and the opposing captain was really great to me, too. I wish he was still playing here, he was always great to be around in the pool room.

and now a look at the flip side of the coin.

i also added a player from my money league a few weeks ago. as you know the rules state all new players start as a 4. well i told my lo that i honestly thought this guy should start as a 5. my lo says its perfectly ok to start him as a 4 and i said no i will start him as a 5 because i just want to be honest.

he has asked me several times what i thought about certain players and i just want to continue having that trust between us.

well sure enough he went up to a 6 after his 1st match. so this week we faced a team that the captain and his wife used to play on my team until last session. well my 6 puts the smack down on their 5 winning 5-0.

after the matches are over and i go to sign their scoresheet i see she made a note on the bottom that she thought my 6 was under handicapped. i could not help but laugh after reading that as i signed their sheet. she had no idea that my player would have only been a 5 this week instead of a 6 if i had not started him as a 5 last week lol.

what i really find amusing about all this is she is so concerned about making sure the lo is aware of what she thinks players handicaps should be is this. she played the 18 year old that i mentioned in my op that had never played before and did not even know how to hold a cue properly. btw he only played 9 ball last week and the lo dropped him all the way down to a 2 after the lopsided loss he had..

well like i say she played him 8 ball this week and as rules state he had to start as a 4. since she is so concerned about proper handicapping she could have at least put down he is way over handicapped after the butt whipping she put on him dontcha think ?

i just had to share this as i think its funny as hell ..lol.

Regrettably we usually only hear the about the bad apples in league. Not everyone in league pool is cut throat. During the great recession I was out of work, I gotten a few job interviews through people I knew from playing pool.

yea i agree with you ctyhntr..

i used to be a utility subcontractor years ago. when the housing boom went bust so did my biz. i eventually lost everything including my wife and son.

i could not find a decent job anywhere so i eventually kept lowering my expectations to where i even applied for a doorman at walmart with no luck.i was unemployed for over a year and being self employed all that time with no unemployment insurance for my self really put a hurting on me..

through pool i met a wonderful girl who has now been my gf for 3 years. also got a job with someone through pool. although i currently make less than i paid my employees 10 years ago i feel somewhat blessed to at least have a job and decent health for my age.
