Nylon insert

I've never been a real big fan of Hubler's nylon inserts as they seem easily cross threaded and they dampen the feel of the hit some what. Years ago I tried making some nylon inserts to use but they never worked out well as they seemed extra tight after tapping them so I usually just used brass. The question is: What do you people use for the Huebler inserts with success and how do you install them since I wouldn't think glue would stick real well to them? I have a customer who wants a new shaft to be as close to original as possible. Thanks in advance for any useful information you would like to slide my way.

I called Paul and bought some of the inserts from him. I use my normal 24 hour epoxy. Faster setting epoxies will not work well. 7/16-20 outside threads.

I've used ABS with good results. All of my inserts, regardless of material are made the same way. I thread the OD & grind 1 or 2 flats on the side of the treads(about 1/2" of the bottom threads). Then I thread & glue them in. While it's still centered in the chuck I drill , bore & tap the inside threads. That way I know the inside threads are centered in the OD of the shaft. The flats act as a keyway, to lock the bushing in place & do not allow the bushing to move or unscrew...JER

Delrin

I made some out of delrin. Glued them in with West System Thin Epoxy. They worked great and the customers said it improved the "feel" of the hit. Haven't had any come-backs on them yet.

I make them out of phenolic and use a .308X18 tap. I bought some from Heubler years ago but he cut the heads off at 8 bucks each, Big surprise and disappointment there.

i have only made 4 of them but so far all is well.
used an old cutting board made of nylon. cut into 1/2 strips and turned round. threaded outside 7/16 epoxed in, and then drilled bored tapped.
so far so good .
i could not get paul to sell me anything , said he dosent sell parts.

I don't know about anybody else, but I just use a die that I bought years ago at the hardware store. Material like ABS threads very easily...JER

Jerry, have you found the ABS to hold up well? I've only used ABS as an insert once and that was for a radial pin as I was looking for something that held up better than maple. I thought it awfully soft and was afraid that it would cross thread easily. Just wondering if you've had better experiences using it?
Thanks

Hi Dick; I've used ABS as bushings for 3/8-10, 5/16-14 & 5/16-18. I've never had one returned, because of failure. Lately I have switched my ferrule material to JUMA. I made a shaft for a freind & used the JUMA for the insert (5/16-14). He has had it for only a few months, but I think it will hold up well...JER
