OB-1 shaft question

What is the difference between Model #14 and Model #14R?

They both look to be piloted 5/16 14 joints, but the fitting chart clearly lists them as fitting different cues.

Thanks!

The "R" denotes the addition of a decorative silver trim ring!

OB-1 also specify the specific width of each shaft model at the joint, which can be reassuring when making a purchase.

I hope this helps!

For real? So either model would fit both a Joss or a Schon then?

That's great to know. Thanks Dave!

What's the story on the actual "seat" of the joint, the metal insert? It looks like its walls are thicker, and cut curved.

Does this change the mating surface between the two shafts?

the pictures above look like uniloc inserts not 5/16x14. They probably just re-used the same picture.

It's not looking like it:

The OB-1 (model #14R) pic is from the manufacturer's website...and I also remember someone here mentioning that there was a very specific make and count of their shaft made specifically for Schons.

It seems like a compromise to buy a $200 shaft that only fits the pitch, but doesn't mate and pilot solid. Can anyone clairify this for us?

(btw, I own an OB in 3/8x10 with a sniper...and it's pretty awesome.)

Any time we have called Royce he has been able to get whatever we needed done...specific joint diameters, rings, threads.....whatever we needed. Might wait two weeks for custom order

So we should call in advance to have a custom OB-1 made for Schon's, instead of buying one that is listed to fit?

Model 14R is more than good enough for the Schon. I have a Schon LTD1111 and use a stock 14R - no problem. The preparatory Schon twist where they pull some of the black collar down over the brass is something you only get on a Schon shaft.

I know, because I have asked them to customize a OB blank for my cue which was a no go from them. Schon don't do this type of work for their customers where I was asked to get the shaft manufacturer to customize the shaft to their/my cue!

But all in all, this is splitting hairs and I'm more than happy with the 14R.

The point Santee makes is that Royce and the boys could support you with which ever version of threads you need, but they need some time on it in case.

I have parked three Pred 314 shaft and simply can't go back and play with them now when I have gone for the OB solution - the difference is THAT big and I have never looked back any more.

I recently switched over to the OB-1 and absolutely love it.
Low deflection like the 314 but MUCH better feel. I game a
JossWest Tuxedo Silver Ringed and found it interesting as
well that Predator didn't offer a 314 silver ringed "radial pin"
so it also was a better looking match as well.
