I thought that I had seen a thread about this before but I searched the forums and couldn't find it.

Anyway I have some extra money to spend and was thinking about getting a new shaft for my Viking. I am either going to go with the OB-1 or the 314-2. I have heard mixed reviews for both shafts and was wondering what everyone here thought about either shaft or what their experience was with them.

I have been playing seriously for about two years now and have been using the Viking shaft the whole time.

Also, the Viking shaft is a 12mm and I am wondering if I will notice a difference in the shaft diameter, since the OB-1 is only available in 12.75mm and the 314-2 is 12.25mm. I use a open bridge.

 Neither ! I vote for the I-2 shaft :) can i do a write in Ballot? ?

I vote for the OB-1. The deflection reduction is great, but my favorite thing about it is the feel of the hit. I've put it on $30 cues just for grins and they instantly hit like a quality cue. Not as good as an OB-1 on a good cue, but better than you'd ever think a Wally World cue could hit. If you ever want to make some money, go get one of the cues with the flashing lights and the lava lamp thing in the butt, put the OB-1 on it, and clean house. I know Royce is gonna see this and freak, but hey, we all have our strategies, eh? :D

Next time you see the easy money with the lava lamp cue, watch out, it may be ME. :p :D :D

Actually, both cues are 12.75mm. I use to own a 314-2, but the hit to me felt dead. I sold that shaft and I now use an OB-1 shaft. The performance is similar, and to me at least, the hit feels much better.

I have 2 OB 1 shafts and 2 predator shafts and have tried the tiger shaft and I use the OB 1 shaft on a predator butt, try a OB 1 and you will be well pleased and try the standard medium Tallisman tip that they come with for a few weeks and I don't think you will want to give either one up.---Leonard

Are you saying that you ALWAYS use an open bridge? Not advised. You should definitely try to familiarize yourself with both open and closed bridges.

Yes, I have always used a open bridge, I just never really felt comfortable shooting with a closed bridge. Is there that much of a difference?

personally i agree with belmicah above. in snooker using an open bridge is fine because the game is different. you aren't hitting the shots quite as hard, the balls are lighter, and you arent using left and right spin on shots. plus a power draw shot in pool is a great example, a closed bridge makes this shot miles easier and much more controlled.

obviously you can still play the game well with an open bridge but ideally, you want to master the closed one too. with a bit of practice it will feel comfortable soon enough, i can guarantee.

What you are saying about snooker is nonsense.I`ve seen Robertson do a table draw(10 feet to the ob+10 back) with an open bridge.I couldn`t believe my eyes.No english? They are even using english to "cheat" the ob path to pocket the ball if they don`t have a clear way to the pocket.
If you don`t play snooker just turn the tv on once in a while.
no hard feelings
p.s.And you are from England?

I use the OB-1 on my viking and like it alot, I think you will be very pleased with it once you get used to the differences between it and your stock viking shaft.

lol :p

perhaps i didn't put my point accross brilliantly. i've seen more hours of snooker than i've eaten hot meals! so i know the game. what i'm saying is the style is different. bigger, heavier balls, different taper on the cue, and generally, more emphasis on spinning the cueball round the table, throwing object balls in and drawing the cueball with outside english. i just believe the closed bridge is more suited to this differnet style of play. obviously i know you can still do these things in snooker, but it's done a lot less.

I think that I am going to go with the OB-1.

Now what should I get for the tip? I know that poolcuemaster suggested that I go with the Med Tallisman, is that going to be a noticeable change from the Sniper that I use already on the Viking shaft? Because isn't a Sniper tip a Hard tip?

I went from using a Sniper on a different laminated shaft to using the Talisman on the OB-1 and I haven't had any trouble so far. I think I'm going to try a Sniper on the OB-1, but I don't feel like I really NEED to. I'm going to do it, mostly out of curiosity, because I've always had good luck with them. IMO, nothing wrong with the Talisman, though.

It's all about preference. I have owned both and I prefer the 314-2.
Of course I started out using Predator so it was a bit different switching to the OB-1.
The OB-1 did have a nice feel, my preference was to stick to what I know, the Predator gets my vote.
There is no right/wrong answer, just opinions!
