The shot the original poster is talking about is something that I've done thousands of times showing it to people but I've hardly ever used it in a game. 2 trick shots that I have used in a game are the side cushion time shot and the hug the rail from corner to corner with force follow.
Position cue ball A is the standard trick shot. Position cue ball B is what came up in a game for me. That was the only thing I could see so I took a swing at it and made the damn thing.
The other one is forcing the cueball along the rail. I actually made this in a game of 9-ball on the first shot after the break....sinking the 9.
I really like trick shots and I went through a period probably around 10-12 years ago where I was really into them and would do little "exhibitions" for whoever was willing to watch at the pool room. I've always said that trick shots are pretty much just that, trick shots, but sometimes the principles behind them can come in very handy in a pinch.
