Oh God, it's a 1 piece slate table, can I move it by myself?

Just found out that the table I'm gonna to move is a 1 piece slate table (Fischer, SN:A91152).

1. Can I move it without dissemble it? If yes, can I move it by myself (without help from professionals)

2. If I find 3 other friends (4 include me), is that enough?

3. Is the $19.95 U+Hall will do the job?

Any suggestions are welcome!

All the best,

Tom

It's a free table. That's why I'm thinking if I move it by myself, it will be really free (Well, I guess I have to take my friends to some pizza shop for sure :)).

So why do you think I can't handle the moving by myself?

Thanks,

Tom

How much are you paying for this table?

unless youre all olympic weight lifters i dont think you can move it while disassembled, its bulky, hard to get thru doors, etc.

I guess you could but its a lot harder then what you are expecting trust me. Are you close to the table so you could go look at it and then prepare yourself for tools etc. you'll need?

You need to take the rails off and if its like any other Fisher 1pc. it has crazy rail anchoring system that is hard as hell to get to and tough to keep their anchors in-line to pull the rails out. The slate is held onto the rails therefore it has no screws etc. You wont even have to take any of the cloth off. It would take 2 guys...

If It Is A Bar Table You Can Take It Apart, Move It With Three Others And Put It Back Together Without Much Problem. I Have Done It Many Times. The Slate Is The Hard Part. Awkward And Heavy But Handled With Three People. Make Sure The Guys On The Ends Are Pretty Strong.i Have Carried Them Out Of Basements And Sheds Many Times.the Slate Weighs More Than The Rest Of The Dam Table. If Its A 8 Or 9 Footer Get Professional Help. I Wouldnt Even Attempt That.

The slate is 7/8" thick, it measures 47 1/2" wide by 91 1/2" long, and weighs 387lbs. It's just sitting there in the frame of the table and the rails clamp down on it by sliding T bars around the edges of the rails, under the beauty trim covering them up. You can't flip the table up on it's side, because you'd break the side skirts off, so you're going to have to take the pockets out, and remove the rails. Once that's done, you and your friends can get a 4 wheel dolly from U-hall, walk the slate off the table, that is providing who ever set the table up didn't staple the cloth down to the frame of the table, if they did...remove the cloth...it's toast anyway. Lean the slate over onto the dolly, WITH the help of your friends....roll it out to your truck or van, lean it down with the help of your friends and pick up the slate and slide it into the truck or van..on two by fours like sliders. Then go back and pop the legs off the table frame as they just mount in fitted cones at the top of each leg on both sides, then finish loading the table parts...you're done. Reverse the order when you get the table to your house...then call someone to recover and level it. You'll need a 100 inch rip of Titan cloth to do that.

Thanks for the input. And yes, it's a 8' so I think I'd better hire some professionals to do it (although it's from garage to garage, no steps, etc.). It will cost ~$300 though. So not a real free table :o

All the best,

Tom

If it was my table I would pay someone $300 to move it. It isnt worth hurting yourself, especially if you arent a seasoned slate handler. If you need cloth let me know. I can get you some fairly cheap my buddy buys bolts at a time...

Glen, would 100" do the rails too? I think his bolts are 68" wide.

It also happens to be a very good 8ft table. Cliff Thayer promoted them back in the 70's and 80's...he also happens to be one of the best pool players of all time...one of only 4 people to have ran over 400 balls playing 14.1 straight pool before missing. And the only player in history to ever put on a trick shot exhibition for the Pentagon...8 hours worth.

Glen

I have one of the same tables...I'm selling it for $1,200.00 just to let you know.

Yes, same slate as any 8ft bar box.

Thank you guys again for all the input (especially to Glen - although I decided to hire somebody to do it, I really appreciate your detailed instructions. I would print it out and put it in my pocket if I was gonna move it by myslef).

Anyway, I found a similar table on eBay (the picctures are very close to the table I'm gonna move, see below). Overall, do you guys think this is a decent table? Does is worth >$300 (for moving) to get it?

Have a good night!

Just saw your message. Wow, it worth that much? Then definitely I'll hire some professionals to move it. I don't want to damage it during the transportantion.

All the best,

Tom

My friens brother after their father passed away moved a old table wit 1 inch slate by himself. It was also in a basement. HE called around and could get no one to move it. He is a engineer by trade so he whent to work. He designed a carriage to hold the slate on its side. Then mounted a winch in the truck. He winched the table right up the stairs then right up the ramp into the truck.

That sounds familiar huh Glen!!! LOL!!!

My neighbor's 8 footer

I helped my friend move an 8 foot one piece table to his house. There were 3 of us. We pulled the legs and the cushions (bar table type construction), removed the 1 piece slate. Loaded the legs, then the body, then the slate back into the body. All into my S10 pickup! The wedge effect of the body spread the bed apart. I had to put a ratcheting hold down strap by the tailgate so I could latch it when we were done. I left that strap on for a month to bend the bed back on a permanent basis. Every time I see the gap between the tailgate and bed sides that gets wider from bottom to top, I smile. We had a lot of fun playing on that table, too! Good luck with yours! It is worth the effort.

1) Yes. If you have a specialty built dolly like we do.
2) Yes - Make sure they have good health insurance. And you'll only need 2 more if you have a special dolly made for moving 1peice slate tables.
3) Yes - But much safer to let a profesional do it.

We are one of the few companies around town that actually deals with 1peice slate tables. I hate it to. But we are real picky on what kind of job we do. If it is going from Garage to truck then to another Garage we charge $500. If they take it great if not oh well. If steps, hills, or other obsticles and risks get involved we charge more.

Moving a 1peice can be dangerous. Becuase if something goes wrong on the move either A) the table is getting screwed up or B) a person is getting screwed up.

I say higher a profesional if you can find one.
