Ok, here is what I do.
First of all - you have to know how to get your body/stance into the proper line of the shot. Period. If you aren't doing this....it don't matter what you're aiming at. Max Eberle taught me how to make sure I was doing this every time when I took private lessons years and years ago. You got to make sure you're in line and your stroke is in line. Once you learn how to do this - move on to the Matt_24 special aiming system. Get your credit cards ready.
I start off by aiming to hit the object ball full in the face, as if it were a dead straight shot. I then look and see what the angle is in order to cut the object ball into the pocket. Every non-dead straight in shot is a cut shot....so once I see that angle I see how full or thin I need to hit the object ball. I will have to adjust the piece of the object ball in my aim to compensate and aim properly w/ english. This will be different for EVERY CUE! Yes, every cue plays differently so even if you use 314 shafts you still must do some microadjusting when you get a new 314. Same goes big time for regular shafts....especially going from vast differences in tapers/tip sizes/etc.
Anyhow, by starting off every shot by looking at it dead in the face and then looking at the angle, it seems much easier to see the angle and where to hit the object ball. Does that even make sense? It does to me...LOL. Of course, I get to shooting and don't need to do this....but if I start missing balls or I'm feeling rusty then this is what I do. Once you get in stroke you don't have to do much more than make sure you're in line. Getting IN LINE is always the first priority.
I hope this helps someone....if not, ignore.
