Old Growth maple for Shaft

A week ago a guy shooting on the table next to me had a cue that had a birdseye maple shaft.

I had never seen anything like this and asked him about it. He said he made the shaft himself as an experiment from old growth BEM recovered in Oregon. He estimated the wood to be about 300 years old. He also said he liked the way it hit but did it more out of curiosity and for the love of DIY'ing.

Pretty neat.

Call New Brunswick or Nova Scotia hardwood suppliers for a piece of maple. I was in the logging/lumber business in New Brunswick (Canada) for many years and the maple there is second to none. I was looking to supply large volumes of shaft wood in the early 90's and was told by Dufferin and Canada Billiards that the wood was the best available. The temp there slows down the growth of the trees giving them 25+ rings per inch. If the trees are cut in the winter the wood is whiter because the sap is in the roots. I would call mills in NB if you want the best...I should get back into lumber maybe...

I think I read on this site that he uses submerged logs from lake michagan and talks alot about growth rings an making a cue for efron. I think he claims he has the lowest deflecting shaft due to the growth rings, something like that. Its been a while since I looked at his site. A friend of mine says he is making a cue for him and he has a shaft from him already which I hit some balls with, it hit nice.

No doubt!!! It made that movie worth seeing :D

The website you provided in that post is interesting. I have alot of interest in the low deflecting shafts. Did you read down where he bashes one of the members of AZB? Same guy who was arguing with me about it last week.

Old Maple

In the mid 1800's, after the Chicago fire burned 80% of the city, wood was harvested in Northern Michigan and shipped across Lake Michigan, for years to rebuild the city. A couple of those ships sank off the Illinois coastal port and was recently salvaged. The wood was under water for over 150 years. Needless to say, it was well cured. The cargo was mostly oak and maple of different species. It was bought by brokers at auction and later wholesaled to cabinet makers, gun stock makers, etc. I know as a fact that the respected cuemaker, Jim Buss bought some of the maple, for I spoke with him in person and later had him make me a shaft for my Jim Buss cue from some of the straight grain maple. I played with the shaft for a couple of years before having Jack Madden convert the shaft to fit on my Madden cue where I now screw it on to break and afterward screw on my playing shaft. I have an extra hard Talisman tip on it. It performs very well. If interested, call Jim Buss or Jack Madden for I also had Jack make me two fiddleback maple shafts from wood that he similarly acquired. Hopefully one of these cue makers will have some wood remaining in their inventory?
