Can any of you Professional Cuemakers help me with info on these Old Growth Maple shafts. I first learned about them from Paul Daytons website and I am interested some opinions about the quality of play and where I could get some? I appreciate any help you guys can give me.

Old growth shaft usually refers to wood that has been cut out of forests that have not been cut in many decades or never before. Some also call the wood that comes from sunken logs out of the bottom of Lake Superior old growth. I was told that particular wood although very old and fairly well preserved, has been eat up with an enzyme and has a very dull hit to it. Most people are loooking for really tight grained shaft wood when looking for old growth. I have some shaft wood that is pretty tight grained if you are wanting to see what it feels like. That is what I try to use on my cues. Not as pretty in many cases as the loose grained fast growing wood, but the extra bit of stiffness is just right for me.

Dave another source where you can find old growth shaft wood is old house cues from the mid-1940's and before. If you can find some of these older cues and they are straight and large enough in diameter, a cue maker can make you a shaft from one.

The tip area should be around 13.5 mm and the section where the cut is made from the butt should be at least .875 thousands or larger, with the over all length 30" inches plus.

I have made quite a few shafts from old cues like these. They are very stiff, and nothing hits like them, because of many factors. Some of the ones I have made had anywhere from 35 to 60 growth lines per inch, and this is about impossible to find today in shaft wood.

By the way, I do not have any for sale at this time, but I hope this information helps.
