Old Meucci butt fix.Delrin as replacement?

A friend has a old Meaucci- one of those with playing cards at the butt.
He cracked the butt after/during a match and I'm planning to make a new in Delrin. I know Delrin glues not to good, but I think it would be stronger.

However, do any one know what the original butt is made of? It reminds me about the material I have on my Schon, but then I do no know what that is either....Is there any one who still use Delrin in cues, or is this a "no go" these days?

It's a MP type plastic.

The only real problem I have experienced with delrin, is that it's tough to keep a clearcoat on due to it's properties... it seems that no matter how you prep the surface, one ding or bump and it peels right off !

if anyone has any suggestions on successfully applying a clearcoat with a normal lifespand that info would be greatly appreciated as well....

Other option is that you just buff it out to a high sheen...

Thanks, Eddie Wheat

I have been searching for that Meucci material for years, but I never can find the exact color....

Atlas and Prather's don't have the exact match....

Do you have any sources for obtaining that stock???

You help would be greatly appreciated !!!

Sincerely, Eddie Wheat

The reason it doesn't exactly match the color is that Meucci's lacquer finish has yellowed so much that you aren't seeing the material's real color, in my opinion.

There is no finish that will stick to Delrin, that any one knows of. Everyone I have ever known who uses Delrin just polishes it to almost the same luster as an auto finish. Delrin makes for a very strong, ding and crack resistant butt cap but it's draw back is that finish nor glue will stick to it properly so it has to be fairly bulky so that it can be mechanically attached.

Yes, I'm aware of that problem.... I'm referring to the raw material once you sand it down...

For example trying to match a White collar on a new built shaft to the existing j-collar on the butt and refinishing it after talking the clear all the way down... there is a distinct difference between meucci's material and what the market has to offer....

I followed your ATLAS link but unless they have added it to there inventory in the last 2yrs I have not been able to exactly match the grain and color with their stock...

So what do you suggest ?

check your pm's Eddie....

I'm an old man who has seen and experienced at lot in this world. an awful lot of what I've done was strictly accidental....lol. I think I pm'd you some info that will help you in the plastics search.

I didn't think part of what I sent you should be in a public forum, info that possibly could get someone fired, you know...

.....I think sometimes we give up a lot of info in these forums, but sources should be held close to the vest...

Jack,

Thanks, for the PM regarding the lead on the Meucci Materials and I tend to agree with you regarding too much info. being freely offered on here, it's has raised a couple of "red flags" with my comments as well !

Take Care, Eddie Wheat

We are I guess 6-8 hours away in time so I was sleeping when you commented and I guess you guys sleep now.

Anyway, My idea was to do as Dick mentioned, make a new but cap and try to polish the material to the best finnish I can get. I have however not the cue in my hands so I'm not sure about the mechanical attachment on this cue, so I need to sort this out.

The general "plastic" field is a tremendous large area. My source has 58 different categories and in each you could have X amount of combinations....

What's frustrates me is however all the strange names we use in the pool world ;Aegis, Ivorine etc. Is this copyrighted brand names or is there some wise man who found a plastic in the commercial world and re-sells it as "billiards" plastic? I think it's great that some one makes something if this is the case (Elforyn). I really don't see my self making a pool cue of something where snipers perform extermination on some type of animal just because it look fancy. I'm scouting for feel and performance and currently investigating in a lot of materials for ferrules, joints and butts, but this is a different story.
