I got a hold of some old micarta. I don't have much and don't want to waste any of it experimenting. I would like to know what is the best direction to cut it layered or stripped? What I have is 1.125 thick Which way are Southwest's cut?

Thanks

Hey mac,
place it on your band saw table and lay it flat, and cut it long ways.Make sure your cutting it a little wider than the 1.125.You really need a good saw/fence to keep it from crawling off. A fresh band saw blade, maybe a diamond toothed one. These are a little expensive, but to me, well worth the money. You can buy one with about .030 total kurf, and it saves on material.

Then center drill each end and turn cut to 14 mm. If your careful, it will turn round and clean up at 1" long and .517 in dia. provided that's the size your wanting.

Hate to sound dopey but just want to be sure. When you say long ways you mean with the grain? The finished ferrule will have a grain (laminations) running length wise, top to bottom?

Mac, for what it's worth. Make sure you wear a full-on mask/resperator as that thing is toxic. Same with paper base phenolic.
I dunno if the sheet will look good as ferrules. I believe the old ones( rods) were wound not pressed.

Hi Joey, long ways means turning the material so the linen is wraping around in stead of crossing the ferrules. Flat sheets can be turned two ways for cutting. Just turn it the long way, by looking at the sides, you can tell.Top to bottom...
