its not finished, but i'm getting there. i put the water slide on the bocote and as suspected the photo did not show very well. so i cut the butt and put on a piece of the only pure white thing i had in the shop, derlin.

photo looks great, but it peels if any type of finish is applied. so i am trying a mixture of tight bond wood glue and water to adhere the photo to the derlin. [ this photo ]

when this dries i will try the epoxy finish over it. if that fails i guess i will try the rattle can of clear.

any other ideas???

Delrin is specifically formulated to be hard and slippery, so it's generally not going to form a reliable bond with any finish - best case you can hope for is a very weak mechanical bond that is certain to fail after some period of time. What you're trying to do is equivalent to coating the soles of your running shoes with Teflon in an attempt to gain more traction.

Your best bet might be to use catalyzed automotive paint - opaque white - to coat a wooden buttsleeve, then apply the decal, and then finish with clear. There may be other viable solutions as well, but Delrin under finish isn't one of them.

You might consider putting it over some nice white maple or holly. Delrin is definitely more trouble than it is worth.

great thinking chris

As soon as I understood the derlin was wrong I started looking for a piece of holly. Photos in the future

I would have used Juma 100% over anything else. Once you get the decal on use a wet cue tip to roll the bubbles out.

You have to seal that holly and get a nice flat substrate. After you get the decal on and set i would lightly scuff it and shoot some more Krylon Crystal clear on it to coat the edges and make a smooth transition to the sealer that is on the rest of the cue. Scuff again and then apply finish.

I agree, either Juma or a polyester, or acrylic rod, etc... as they already have a smooth surface without having to use sealers first to get that, but most finishes and glues stick really well to them.
