Old-Style Score Keepers

This was before my time, but I seem to recall seeing a wall-mountable score keeper that had multiple sets of beads on it. I'd like to find something like this for my house since I have a Diamond and they don't have score keepers on the rail. I see these ones on the internet that have rails and little brass "sliders", but I'm not sure I want that one. I'll be primarily using this to keep score for straight-pool. Anyone know what I'm talking about and, if I'm right about this type of score keeper existing, where I can find one?

Another idea ....

That is a little different, if you have a laptop computer, just do an EXcel
worksheet that divides the screen in 2 with name and score in BIG print,
and where when you enter a number, it increments the score by that number. You could do a macro to run the whole thing.

I've seen those hanging over billiard tables. That may still work. I could get 2 of those and use one color for the frame score and one color for the total score (which is why I'd need two of them - assuming I had an opponent). I thought about getting two of the ones with the little sliding piece.

I don't know about the laptop idea. I do have a laptop. I even have a PPC-6700 (pocket PC phone) and I could use pocket excel, but I was hoping to put something in the room with the table to add to the decor. :)

Jummy ... Be advised that the 'kits' to hang the scorekeepers are 'out of stock' (click on kit information at the scorekeeper screen).

scorekeepers

Jimmy,
I looked around for quite a while to find something similar that also looked nice in the room. I ended up buying an antique snooker "marker board" on Ebay. These don't have beads but some have nice sliders. The antique look is cool too.
Just an idea,
J

Have you gone by that billiard place on 16th street and McDowell? They have all kinds of pool related stuff.

If you have a mental picture of what you want, you could just make a stop at Lowes and a Craft store and make one..

Who the hell do you think you're talking to here? Manual Labor is that Hispanic guy who lives a few houses down from me, right?

Hey Jimmy

A pool room I used to play in had what you are describing I believe.

It was a shelf but below that three or four rows of beads for marking games or balls. The shelf/unit was about 18-24 inches long and had
a top and sides. The beads were mounted on rods that were inserted on either side and secure. I want to say it was 4 rows of 25 beads but I am not sure.
It worked very well and each table had one.

If you can find the beads I would think you could find a suitable and decor matching shelf and make this yourself very easily.

Its a long shot but I will send an email to a guy that might know where one or more of he ones from the old pool room are or is they bought them from someone.

Actually they are made to keep rack and total score on one wire.

You keep total score solid against the center separator

You keep rack score in the space in the middle, and move over at the end of the rack.

So the rack score from both sides and the balls on the table is on the table always =15

The wires are really the best way to keep score in my opinion

I think that I have seen what you may be talking about. In a billiard supply store I saw a wall mount that held a set of balls and had 6 or 8 rows of beads. It was a bout 4 feet tall and 2 and a half feet wide. I remember thinking it was cool but pricey. I think I remember which store it was in. I'll see if its there next time I in that area.

Jimmy,

Forum member SPetty has a neat setup for her scoring beads. Maybe send her a PM. I know she has a pic of them.

You could

buy 2 abacasus's and mount them on the wall, the original calculator...lol

This is exactly the way they are made to be used. Push the beads half way, for the rack score. At the end of the rack, verify that everything adds up correctly and push them the rest of the way.

I with pool rooms would bring these back into use. How the hell are you suppose to score 14.1, with only 11 balls on each side of the wire.
Pool rooms have to learn that not everyone is playing 9-ball.

No kidding. A wire with 50 peas works well for keeping score for any game, even 14.1 to 1000.

Hi Jimmy,
I actually built my own, with the artistic help of my wife, and am quite proud of it BTW.

For the beads for Straight pool I went to "Hobby Lobby" and bought a spool of craft wire, and 10 bags of 1 1/8" toy car wheels, and some "decorative beads that I could hot glue some thin pieces of wood for every tenth bead to number 10, 20 etc. (also at Hobby Lobby). At the end of each string I glued a little piece of the wood to keep them hanging nicely on the wire. I have two strings of 150 hanging length wise with my light.

I also built me a Match score keeper. I got some oak pieces from home depot (2 3 foot pieces and 2 16" pieces of wood) I also got me 2 steel rods about 3/16" diameter. We picked up 30 wood balls from Hobby Lobby at 1 1/4"
and I drilled holes throught them and my wife painted them like 2 sets of pool balls.
Then in the lower left and right corners of my bracket I put 5 beads left over from the straight pool string on bothe corners 2 keep track of owed balls in one pocket, or keep track of sets one by whichever player.
I completed all of this for under 40 bucks.

Donovan came up with a pretty neat scorer that he modified. Check it out I found a pic in a previous post by him, if you like it PM him.
