Old Viking joints on LD shafts

I'm looking at purchasing an old Viking cue. Best I can figure is that it's a B series cue with a Type A joint (Implex to Metal).

Some of the cues I enjoy playing with most have been random old cues mated to newer LD shafts, but these old Vikings have some of the less common pins. Are there any manufacturers that still make shafts with these old style pins?

You can get it to fit any pin you want. If the shaft maker does not make it then order a blank and a cuemaker can fit it. Seriously. This is a non-problem.

Even custom pins and inserts can be machined. For things like the Viking superjoint, call viking. They still do it.

I spoke with Viking about this some time ago about a older Viking I picked up with that modified quick release they produce. The shop told me they ( or builder ) are essentially a 5/16 x 18 and can take a stock 5/16 x 18 LD and just 're-tap' a few thousandths over and they work great and still can be used on any 5/16 x 18 joint.

Check the joint diameter if you like your cue joint to match up. I know Predator 5/16x18's are only .835 at collar and some older cues are .840+. Of course, a LD blank is always an option.

Have a good weekend,

-Kat,

Thank you both.

The pin is indeed 5/16-18, the pilot was throwing me off as I've mostly owned flat-faced cues. I did a bunch of searching, it seems like it doesn't matter much whether or not you put a piloted shaft on it.

Once I got the cue, it turns out that the shaft is actually really straight and it's the butt that has a slight warp in it. Plays pretty nice for the super cheap I picked it up for.

Thankfully HxT shafts are pretty cheap, and thats what I shoot with now and like them a lot. I threw up a post in the wanted section looking to see if anyone wants to sell a used one, but I'll probably just buy a new one soon.

HXT?

Should be easy to find one. And even new it shouldn't be too much, though I have not priced them.

Indeed, the pilot does not matter. You can use a flat faced shaft instead of piloted.

The exception will be a true "compression pilot". Many will say it matters a great deal in that case. Some will argue that. Heck, some will even argue over the term "compression". In either case it does not matter as you are dealing with a compression pilot.
