Am I just an old fart, or does this happen to you as well? Every time there's a big tournament going on I try to watch it, but after a short while I get bored and wind up switching to old matches on accu-stats or Ray Carlton's channel instead. I find them much more enjoyable than the current stuff at least partly for the following reasons:
The venues seem much warmer, even cozy.
Losing players racked the balls for their opponent and the other guy rarely bitched about it.
No "shot clock", none was needed.
No 10-angle replays for every damn shot.
No "referees".
No "jump sticks".
No "breaking cues".
I have followed the game for a very long time and am well aware of the reasons for those changes, it just pisses me off that the game has lost so much of it's character from catering to wooses and sticklers, instead of reigning them in. (think Ralf Souquet and the shot clock or Corey Deuel and pattern racking or soft breaks)
Pool was the "man's kind of man" refuge, and I think the old players reflected it. Many of them were sharp showmen, could interact with the crowd AND banter with their opponent. The current crop have the personality of a wet rag.
