anyone know the shaft taper and ferrule type or material on the pre red dot meucci shafts?

The ferrules were very thin-walled and soft...probably a plastic of some type. Maybe Chris Hightower will chime in here concerning the material. He offers them for sale for repairs. I have some of them and have used a few. People have been very happy with them, so they're the real deal. They even have that yellowish-ivory color like the originals.

also, did they install them as capped or uncapped? i also read in anouther post that they used firwood in thier shafts, is this accurate and different from rock maple or is that the same thing?

The shafts had 13 inch straight pro taper. The ferrules were Meucci's secrect formula, but I know it is in the PVC family. I have a few hundred of the original ferrules with 1/4" hole left. 5 for $20 or 10 for $30. Once they are gone we will all have to use the newer whiter stuff Bob is now having made. The ferrules were not capped. Hope I answered everything.

My guess is that when someone wrote firwood they meant firewood and were just running them down. Bob Meucci did a ton to pave the way for modern cuemakers, and even though he has had quality control problems he does not deserve even half as much criticism as he gets. His cues ruled the pro circuit for almost two decades, all the way up until they switched to fast cloth. Can any cuemaker on hear say that their cue ruled the pro circuit for one event. I mean taking the top several money places in one event?
Not trying to start a flame Meucci thing here but I feel he introduced designs with a pantograph that were ahead of everyone else at the time. I wish he had not got everyone wanting snow white shaftwood though. Cues now do not play as well as they should because of people wanting the fast dried white wood.

yeah, i don't really care about shaft color myself, just after years and years of using meucci cues, i became occusemed and perfered the way they hit, and am looking at getting a new shaft and would like to be able to give those specifications to try and reproduce the hit that i got used to and tend to like now.

ferrules

Some of Bob's older ferruels are Ivory, Fiber, or pvc. Straight taper of course on the shaft with no cap on the ferrule like the red and black dots. In other words, take the tip off and you can see wood in the middle of the ferrule on the 'pre-dots'. Supposedly they changed it to a cap-style ferrule for a harder-more accurate hit, since everybody is worried so much about deflection nowadays. By the way, anyone have any pre-dots for sale?

Actually, it was changed for a couple of reasons. I spoke with Bob about it. The thin walled, uncapped ferrule just cracked too easily. The new capped ferrule provided a softer hit while making the ferrule a bit stronger....it also had the tenon stepped down a notch and he left a fairly large hollow area in the top of the ferrule under the cap. This allowed the ferrule to flex quite a bit and move around the tenon. This was Bob's idea of a low deflection trick.

I've got 4 or 5 new (old) shafts that I hand selected yrs ago before the shop moved to SLEDGE, MS. The shafts are close grained old growth and were straight a few yrs ago. All 13mm and .825 at joint.

If I clean bathroom grout with X-14 I can get my wife to email pics of joint collars.

What would a fair price be?
