Olhausen death rattle

If I may paraphrase Sam Jackson, "I have had it with these motherf***ing pockets on this motherf***ing table!"

I have an eight-foot Olhausen, which will be here awhile longer (a Diamond or GC is in the plans, but is at least a year or two off). These two-inch shelves in five-inch pockets are driving me nuts. I'm going to have the table recovered soon, and here's my question: can the slate be recut in the corners to remove about three-quarters of an inch from the shelf? I would like to tighten up the pockets a half inch, but don't really see much of an advantage if I'm stuck with shelves which are suitable for parking small cars.

Can you tell I'm really fed up with this?

Thanks,
Howard

if you tighten the pockets it will shorten your shelf. you need to make sure your pocket angles are cut so they direct the ball to the pocket, not so they rattle and send the ball back to the playfield.

Donnie is right when you tighten your pockets the shelf gets shallower/ shorter. Your table has soft rail rubber so if you hit high on the facing it gives to much or flexes to a different angle there for spitting the ball out instead of accepting the ball propperly.

Change your facings to thicker and better quality facing and this will remove the rattle.
Diamond sales the facings and you here them talked about all the time on az..

Depending on where you are at in California Donny is an expert in this area and so am I either one of us can fix or totally rebuild the rails work 100% the way you want them to.

Thanks for your input, gentlemen. I knew that the shelf would be somewhat shorter with the tighter pockets, but I figured something less than a half inch (does that sound right?). If using a harder facing will also help alleviate the problem, then it would seem that cutting the slate may be unnecessary.

Unfortunately, I am about three hundred miles north of Donny and three hundred miles south of Craig. Damn these big states.

Thanks again.

If the facing is to hard durometer lets 80 and above it becomes a brick with no action; it just goes bonk and sits right in the middle of the pocket. I know i tried it with 1/2" rubber I got for free and it was a piece of oak shaped nice and couldnt bend it, worst thing i ever wasted my time on.

Use the neopreme facing with durometer of 60 Most feel its the best. I was at the rubber store today geting more and checking to see what 20,40,80 and other thicknesses felt like for shimsand facing. I have to agree duro rating of 60 would be best.

were are you fresno or bakersfield? I moght be going out to china lake basin/ Ridgecrest area for a special project with the cable company again, just temp work.

Hey Howard,
I had the same problem with my Olhausen table until RKC worked his magic. Among other things, RKC replaced the facings and the table now plays great. Now I have to learn how to play since I can't blame the table any longer.

That's good to hear, Rip. It's encouraging to know that the problem can be resolved. I just don't know if it's worth it as the table will only be here another year or two (I hope).

No, I'm not in the San Joaquin Valley, Craig. I'm on the coast in San Luis Obispo County. You can find it on the map right next to Nowhere, California. The local Olhausen dealer recently close up shop. It's a shame, as he was a really nice guy to deal with. And the only pool-related business in the county. that I know of.

Thanks guys.

This post was very helpful as I am thinking of buying an Olhausen and want to shim the pockets to a so called (Pro Cut). Now I know what rubber to get and what to look for before I purchase the table.
