OMGWTF v CUBC Game #4 How would you play this?

This was genuinely the first funny layout of the match. Finally having to address the cluster, OMGWTF takes the aggressive route which IMO was perfectly justified. Two money balls in play, pockets everywhere and it pays off however, what else might you have done to improve your chances of winning?

I'll leave it at three diagrams until tomorrow. I think they're all fun ones to discuss.

CueTable Help

bank the seven back uptable towards the middle of the table. cueball slides off the rail and to the bottom rail by the 8, hopefully hooking your opponent on the 7 with the 9.

You should diagram that.

Ditto...excellent shot.

The way it's diagrammed that's a touchy shot. The 9 and the 8 are very close to the line you'd like the object ball to travel. Undercut the 7 a touch and you catch the 8 or 9 and sell out. Overcut the 7 a touch and you bank it up near the corner pocket and leave a shot.

What about playing straight into the 7, firmly, with a touch of follow? Ride the 9, ride the 7 carom, and try to let the cue ball push through and lay up near the 8. If you make either ball you win, and if you miss the 7 it's going to go two rails uptable while your cue ball (hopefully) sticks near the end rail and the 8-ball.

Hit the 7 on the line that cross the center of the 7 and the 9, the 7 will stay there the 9 will go to the top rail and the cue ball to the far end rail, leaving a very hard shot on these tight pockets....

looking at it again, i agree its probably too tough to attempt to drive the 7 one rail back up table. whitey will slide off too much and get loose. That being the case, i still like the shot, only hitting it all out to slide off the top side of the 7 and go one rail with the cueball towards the 8, hopefully ending up froze to the 8. This is a one pocket type shot.

I like that. The 9 might also block the 8-ball's path to the corner pocket (as you diagrammed) which makes it hard to play shape on the 8.

I agree; the problem is that you're going to leave the 7 in the vicinity of the corner pocket. If you get the snooker that's great; if not you leave a shot that still requires moving the cue ball a lot to get back down table for the 8.

Drill the combo...9 in the corner, carom the 7 in the side, play whitey 5 rails back by the 8 .....:D NO Problemo......Say CHEESE!

I agree with this 100%. If you play that right and leave the 7 standing and the CB at the end rail and your opponent gets out, they deserve it. That 9 could very easily block the 8 too. Yeah, I agree with this 110%.

Then again, if there is space between those 2 balls I may try the combo on the 9.

Just went back and watched it. She definitely took the bull by the horns there and let lady luck take over. She won the game but I don't think I'd be riding the 7 there like she did. Looking at it on the table I may even play safe behind the 8.

CueTable Help

I would feel confident that I could get my cueball behind the 8 there. Also, looking at the actual shot on the video it seems like that 8 ball is a bit further off the rail than diagrammed here, like if you set the 7 and the CB on the end rail you'd leave a shot on it. But, with a safety like this you have to concentrate on either the cue ball or the object ball, you can't do both. I feel I could get that cue ball behind the 8 and leave him kicking.
