i was reading another post and thought of something. lets say there are 3 balls on the table. the cue ball, my 10 ball and the 8 ball. the 8 is frozen on the rail by the foot spot. the cue ball and my 10 are near the head string. i dont think i can make a shot on the 10 so i just try to bank it somewhere downtable and leave the cue ball near the far rail away from the 8 ball. while just trying for a long leave and nothing more i accidentaly make the 10 ball. its my oponents shot right? i had no intention of making the ball nor did i call what pocket. his argument was it was a dead bank and it looked as if i was trying to make it and its still my turn and that im just saying its his turn because i didnt shape the 8. its not my shot as i didnt call the bank right?

Bank shots should never be considered an obvious shot and therefore should be called. BCA rules..... however if you're playing APA/CPA slop counts and you state prior to the shot that you're playing safe.

This is the reason we call "Safe", no second guessing.

It's his turn and he's just clutching at straws. Why would you try to bank your ball and leave yourself impossible shape?. You wouldn't.

If it's APA, then that's a whole other fish.

a Kettle of them even :D

Unfortunately, there are too many sets of rules in pool. In apa, you'd have to continue your turn. In BCA or TAP you would have called safe instead of a pocket so you'd give up your turn. If it's bar rules, who the hell knows because bar rules never make any sense.

This senario has happened to me before in APA and it sucks!

but it didn't sound like he called a safe, or there would be no argument. BCA says if you don't call a safe and pocket a ball it's still your turn.

so what you're saying is, a shooter may call safe after the shot based on what he left himself? between friends, it would be no problem but in a tourney, it would certainly raise an eyebrow with me.
i guess this is one of those contradictions in the rules as they are currently written.

Assuming the positioning of the balls is correct. This would be the proper shot if you can avoid the double kiss(es). :D

I don't think you understood my post. I said this is WHY you should call a safe, IOW, call a safe when you're playing a safe. That way there's no arguments.

In BCA, you must call all shots. If you make a ball but didn't call it, you loose your turn. OP said he didn't call the bank, so he would've lost his turn. In APA, fluke shots count. If he was playing safe, forgot to announce it and accidentally made the ball, he'd have to continue shooting.

There's no calling shots after they've been played. I definitely would never say that.
