I`ve seen several posts lately which mentioned "One eyed Tony". The first concerned Tony and Reed Pierce. Seems it took a while before Reed conquered him (years). Another post stated that after Buddy Hall finally beat Tony he was on his way to glory. One eyed Tony must be or must have been one hell-of-a bar box player. Anyone out there have any info on Tony.

He could play

Tony was killed in an auto accident at a very young age. He was a top player on the bar or big table. He had a fabulous slip-stroke. He was a Kentucky boy. I think he was from Hazard, KY. As far as people "finally beating" him, I dont know about that. When he died he was at the top of his game. I know, because we played in Oklahoma City at Truelove's just before he got killed.

Actually, he was from Corbin, KY. Tony died a couple of years before Clyde Childress, another great Kentucky player, who also died in a car wreck.

Corbin, Hazard, what's the difference? I know many guys from both towns. They are all thieves, mechanics and pool sharks. My kinda guys. There are more hustlers come out of Corbin and Hazard per capita than anywhere else in the world. Berle Gabbard, One-Eyed Tony, Louis Sullivan, the great Sid, etc., etc. They all did several tours in Chicago at one time or another.

Mighty John Abruzzo handily beat Tony out of several hun @ $20 p/game on a big table at Town and Country Bowl in Northlake. Bout the same time John beat Cornbred Red on a bar box in ELMHURST. Only loser I recall John booking in those day's(62-66) was when he tried Detroit Whitey in Maywood. SW301-93
