one pocket break

When I get a good rack I hit high on the 2nd
ball barely skimming the 1st ball & often I either
make a ball or put one by my pocket. If I get
a bad rack, however, I either scratch or put
a bunch of balls in front of the other guy's pocket.
When I split the 1st & 2nd ball as I was taught
years ago, I often leave a bank which can be
disastrous. How do you guys break in one hole?

High inside english about 3-4 inches off the rail aiming at the contact point between the headball and the second ball in line. I hit the pack with enough umph to bring the cue ball off the bottom rail and then back up to the 2nd diamond and as close to the rail as possible. I noticed its normally not the rack but how you hit the rack that effects where the balls go. on most of my breaks i get 2 or 3 balls in "my box" and at least 1 really close to my hole or make a ball. try changing the position of the cue ball and use high inside english and see what works.

Pretty much just like that. You should be able to aim to hit the 2nd ball straight on, thereby skimming the head ball...same thing, but easier to visualize than aiming for the edge of the 1st ball.

depending on who i'm playing I either shoot from the 2nd diamond just barely off the rail, high inside, second ball, skim the first (speed is the key with this one, and follow thru for lots of action), OR i'll break really conservatively and bump the head ball, pushing the wing ball to the rail near my pocket. from there on out, it's a defense game for a while, like 14.1 (but harder).

i've never tried to spread the balls a lot or take the cue up table. maybe i'll try that when my 60 hour work weeks are over and i get to play some ;)

Right on Twisted. That's the way I break em too. The only thing I would add is to go just a little higher than the second diamond, between two and three is what I strive for.
