i use high left when breaking from the left,skimming the head ball and contacting the second ball.corner ball drops alot.

i was told to do the opposite.

how do you guys break in one pocket?
 
If breaking from the left side of the table, I use just above center right spin to kill the cueball about the 2nd diamond on the long rail. Its a safety break that has been around for ages. The higher you can keep the cueball (even with the stack) the less likely you are to leave anything...... but thats not a sure thing. There are several good breaks, but high left isnt among them. Too much risk of the cueball running to the center of the table.

Well my favorite break was shown to me by Alan Hopkins. and i only use it when playing 1 certain person. I put the cue ball just off the rail at the 2nd diamond. using right hand english to kill the ball, i shoot the ball directly across the table hitting the 1st diamond on the opposite rail just below the side pocket. This puts the cueball tight into the rack. And when this type of break is done right. yourt opponent cannot move without you getting a shot as the corner ball has been moved below the rack and near the corner. It takes alot of practice to get it right.

now on my regular break i also break from the left side using middle right hand english. but i have seen people use a 14.1 break and get away with it..............mike

I hit the 3rd ball in with inside spin to take the cb to the foot rail then back up to between the 1st and second diamond. I place the CB about a half a diamond on the headstring. I'll break from either side depending on what I think is my opponents weaker side.
 
I agree with rivercity, using outside english (left if breaking from the left) is a good way to sell out. Using inside english will kill the cue ball and leave it on the rail behind the stack, which is the ideal place to end up. Using outside english sends the cueball further away from the rail, and if a ball comes out, your opponent will have a shot. On the positive, if you are making the corner ball often, you are hitting the rack in the right spot. Try hitting the same spot on the rack using right english and see what happens.
 
I also break like RiverCity and desert1pocket, I put the CB on the head-string far enough out in the table that I have room for a normal bridge (not rail bridge), and skim the head ball and contact the second ball with high inside. Balls roll toward my pocket and the side of the stack that I broke from remains pretty much intact, with the cue-ball rolling up next to it. No balls roll out toward my opponent's pocket, and he's blocked by the stack from banking balls away from my pocket and toward his. It's easy, consistent, and gives you a big advantage to start the rack.

thats how i happened upon this way of breaking.

i'm playing once or twice a week with an older guy at our local hall.great guy with lots of knowledge.

he had me breaking using high inside english.he said i had a good 1 hole break.

i tried hitting it the same way, only with high outside english and dropped the cornerball.the cueball hit the end rail,then the siderail and let me with some shots.

he beats me all of the time but the other day i ran six balls off the break and had him in a real mess. a long safety battle ensued with me winning my first game.

so far this break hasn't left me in a bad situation.

i'm fairly new to pool so maybe i'm doing something wrong that is ending up right.
 
The first time I learned a 1pocket break I was told to hit whitey from the 2nd diamond. With it normally sitting on the white skids from the 9ball breakers who have used the table before. Then (If shooting from the left) hit it with 4oclock english. That is about right side just below the center.

He would also tell me to barely hit the head ball so you get a more direct hit on the 2nd ball. Which pushes a good bit of balls towards your pocket. And with the right spin if you do it perfect you will be completely trapped. The cue ball will sit about 2nd diamond on your opponents side.

Which when he played me worked everytime. I do it but mess up a good bit. When I do do it right it works perfect.

I also saw another 1pocket break where i believe you break from the side you choose. Say you chose the left pocket. You hit from the left side and bank your cue ball into the rack. I believe you hit either hte 2nd or 3rd dimaond on your opponents side. Now honestly I forgot the object of this break because I haven't seen it for a while. Either the object is to make a ball or trap your opponent.
