I got the opportunity to watch a race to 5 for $2500.00 last night between Cliff Joyner and Steve "Lizard" Smith. They were playing at CJs in Dallas. My question is this, is it customary to give the stake to someone before the game and collect from a third party?

The reason that I ask is because when the match was over (Lizard won) Cliff did not appear to have all of his share and his stake horse looked very nervous. I left early so I don't know if Lizard got paid or not.

I am not trying to bash anyone. I don't gamble myself but was curious what was the normal MO.

Thanks all.

posting up

it is best for you to lock up the money before you play. that way you dont have to think about the money anymore... ie. your opponent quiting you when he's up 2 or 3 games... or when he's down three games or something like that. when you make your opponent lock up the money it forces him to finish the set out. and you know your opponent has enough to play so your not going to get them stuck a dime or a couple hundred and them not have the money to pay off... that happens very often unfortunately. i dont play anymore "bye the game pool" unless its with someone that i know is good for the money...

Welcome to the board Kid. This sounds vaguely familiar? Quitting someone winner, LOL. Brian, I'm sure they put the money up with a third party. The strange looks you saw probably had to do with whether Cliff and his stake-horse were going to or had enough money to play another set....

If I'm playin a set for 2,500 we are posting with the room owner or some mutual friend we both trust........or we ain't rackin the balls! Period point BLANK! I won't leave the chance to get aired. Then when that set is over the loser pays off and we start another set...........and we still have the post money up. This way when they go bust, ya got one set posted.

Response about Liz & Cliff

I too was there for all 3 matches in last week.
Yes .. Cliff gave up 10-7.. 5 ahead.
Cliff won last Wed. night, Liz. won Thur. night, then again Wed. night.
Money was posted ..
"TR" stakes Liz. "KT" stakes Cliff.
For those of you who don't know who the Lizard is: Steve Smith.
Stakehorses shall remain annonymous .. ( at least from this source ).
Cliff also played Barry Emerson in last week and won at both 9 ball and gave up 9-6 and won at one hole.
Lizard also played Barry one-hole and Barry lost.
There is plenty of other action ( also ) every Wed. ( day & night ) at CJ'S.
