As a recent one-pocket convert, it occurred to me lately that one-pocket needs more high-quality full-length Youtube videos, with expert commentary. There are bunch of excellent videos from the Galveston World Classic. The picture quality is somewhat poor, being just a captured live stream, but the commentary by JoeyA and his co-commentators (like Jeremy Jones, Danny Harriman and others) is just wonderful. These are the videos that got me into one-pocket, and I'm sure many others.
You see, the game of one-pocket appears murky and strange for pool players that don't know it yet. Just some time ago, I didn't have any clue what the game is about, but these Galveston videos are a joy to follow even if you're complete novice to the game. Just watching one-pocket before you're into the game is just too confusing. Watching and hearing expert commentary makes it really easy to get into the game.
I know there are various DVD videos and such for sale, but most of the players who buy these are already into the game. Those players that don't know one-pocket but are potential to play aren't going to buy those DVDs, because they don't know what the hell one-pocket is about anyway. But if there were just few more of those high-quality matches (full-length) on youtube, maybe one day they stumble on one such video and get interested in one-pocket and finally just go crazy about one-pocket. Like me, for example.
By high-quality I mean the video, audio, commentary, the quality of the play, the set-up, the stakes of the game and so on. Those Galveston videos excel in almost all aspects. Big thanks to JoeyA (and others) for those videos. You don't know how big of a difference they've made.
(And note that it's not that I don't appreciate every damn one-pocket video available on the internet, ustream/youtube/wherever. But I think it takes special care to make a one-pocket video/recording that will convert people.)
I'm not saying this is the only way to convert people into one-pocket, but I do think it's perhaps the one that has the most potential. Not everyone will become one-pocket fans. But I'm sure there are people like me who have the potential to become interested in the game and all they need is a good opportunity to do so.
