One Pocket Rules Question

So I have been playing one pocket for about a year consistently and this was the first time this ever came up.

So I decide to jump a ball to pocket my opponents ball. I used my jump cue and someone from the rail stated that it was illegal to use a jump cue(this was after I had already took the shot) There was no fight or anything... me and the guy I was playing agreed that we would not call a foul b/c neither of us had ever heard of that rule. We just couldn't do it again.

So is that really a rule?

Players may use jump shots in One Pocket as long as they are performed with the player's own standard playing cue using legal jumping techniques as defined in General Rules. Specialized jump cues are not permitted in One Pocket.

Please note that many players, poolrooms and tournament directors have differing opinions on specialized jump cues. It is recommended that players check with their opponent, the 'house man' or the tournament director prior to an important match to come to agreement on whether specialized jump cues shall be permitted or not.​
 
Most tournaments are now using the OnePocket.org rules.
Under those rules Jump cues are illegal.

When two players are matching up or just practicing, they may decide what rules to play by. If you own a jump cue and wish to use it during any game you play, I would suggest asking your opponent to agree to using the Jump cue.
 
How about cue extenders?

IMO, these should also be outlawed in 1 pocket. It's a part of the game to leave your opponent stretched out or using a bridge. Too easy to slip on the extender and get out of a jam.
 
I think as long as you are shooting with that phenolic tip the whole match which would suck.
 
i personally take exception to this rule because when your tip on your playing cue gets way low, and you're about to simply fly the cb off the table with a jump shot, i personally dont like to use my playing cue for this and id ideally like to use my jump cue. if my opponent did happen to have a problem with this, which i doubt (only problem would be if i was actually gonna jump over a ball with my jump cue), then i would just grap a house cue off the wall to do it, problem solved. using a house cue isn't illegal, right?

the thing i dont understand about the rule... i think jump cues are illegal because they dont want you jumping over balls or over the stack to get out of traps. why would a jump cue not be allowed if this is obviously not what you are attempting to do? to put it another way, why is a house cue legal and my full length jump cue not legal.... how do you explain that one??

The DCC alowed any full length. This came up in a match I was playing.
I was allowed to use my full length JUmp beak cue.

According to that rule, I don't think switching to a house cue to jump is permitted. But I guess it's always good to ask about it beforehand.

I dunno, the fact that there is even a time in 1-pocket where jumping a ball off the table is to the shooter's advantage has always bothered me a little because whenever you have balls flying off the table, you're risking damage to the balls, other peoples' cues, etc. So I guess it's only fair that the shooter at least puts his own tip at risk too. :D

so, if you're right and somebody came along and accidentally stepped on and snapped my cue in the middle of a 1000 set id have to quit, right? players, should be anyway, afforded the right to switch cues while playing. if the rules say they dont want me to "jump" the ball that is fine, but i should be able to use another cue during the course of a match. in fact, now that i think of it, at the derby i have a dvd and efren goes to another cue on a stretch shot, a cue with a longer shaft, so i do think a player can change cues during the match, but who knows.

That was just my interpretation of the rule I posted, but I could be wrong. Sounds like the DCC had a different way of doing it. I don't have a problem with that, but I do still cringe a little seeing a ball flying off the table even though I'll do it when I have to which isn't often, being relatively new to 1-pocket.

Funny, one of the few times I've chosen this shot, my cue ball accidentally hit the back of the pocket, kicked the hanging ball out of his hole, and ended up safe, so I didn't even have to lose a ball. :o :grin-square:
