One Pocket spots

One pocket is great because it's easy to adjust the handicap and make an even game. You start at 8-8 and reduce or add balls to either side until it's even.

I've heard one of the best players in town say no matter who he plays, the minimum is going to 4. And I've heard of 16-4 races. That's about the biggest spot I've heard of.

Reducing what you go to by 1 ball is a much better spot then increasing your opponents goal by 1.

but if it means moving the ball a hand span when its your shot, i will play the world

It sounds like a lot of weight but remember that you are now going to play 8-8 against the guy giving it to you. Sooner or later you need to get 8 balls. You can still make an error even if you move the cueball. Against top players those errors will kill.

Another game that sounds great is "your fouls don't count" but that's also semi-deceptive.

The guy hit me with 3 "eight and outs" in that match after a tight safety battle. He didn't even have a ton of balls open, he played the up table wedge back to his hole. It was amazing.

Here we go again, the ole' .."if you can play at all you cant lose with that spot".

Like the "Orange crush" (rotation), like the "my scratches dont count" (1pocket) , like the "only have to hit an end rail with game ball to win" (rotation, 8ball), the "hand span" spots (1pocket), and about a dozen other "cant lose" propositions.......Its not a lock people.
Granted it is "on Paper" alot of weight. BUT......in reality it amounts to nothing against a player capable of controlling the table and the game.
A player Who probably knows your speed/game better then you do,and who has a understanding on how the spots are to be played and defended against.

Little bit of "the hand span" spot rules.
The hand span rule requires you to place your hand ...flat palm on the table, you can splay your fingers (somtimes not), when any edge of you hand touches Qball, THEN move the Qball to any other point touching your hand, cant lift your hand and put Qball under it.
SO when (for instance)your in the stack.....Qball surrounded, or tight behind a ball(s) on the rail.. and cant make a hand contact or remove the Qball without fouling an object ball....then what.? Also all object balls are foulable by incidental contact by the hand or while moving the Qball to its new location.
As it should be.

PS.
ONB, some will never understand the " O.C.";)

The only way I have ever seen it played you could move the cb up to 1 handspan in any direction, do not have to move a full handspan if you choose not to. For most players this is a 16 to 20 inch circle, this is a huge spot.

Hand span usually results in an argument on ball placement.

Spelling it out up front has the giver of the spot reconsidering the spot several times over. Not that it is bad, but you definitely need to agree like the poster above me said on where the ball can go to from your palm.

Yep, everyone on this site is a wonderful player who will play anyone with those spots mentioned in this thread:eek:. I'm shaking in my boots.

I know some of these top-players/gamblers/NOLA residents will never understand the "Orange Crush" but puberty has a way of bringing a fellow around to the ways of the world:wink:.

As a couple guys have said...depending on the players involved in the game..it's not always as huge of a spot as it may seem...I speak from personal experience, and from a case in point - the case in point ------>

About 6-8 yrs. ago or so, at the DCC, Scooter got that spot from a champion-speed One Pocket player...Scooter played pretty good One Pocket at that time (but not as good as he plays now)...they ended up even.

Hand-Span

I saw Scott Frost give a B player this spot. The guy pocketed balls pretty good, but didn't control the cue ball. So, even though he could move the cue ball the length of his hand on every shot, he still needed to make 8 balls.
A good player is going to make sure to knock balls away from your hole. If the game goes beyond a few innings, it will favor the better player.
