One Pocket

I finally bit the bullet and a few weeks ago I started playing one pocket. Since I really am not all that good on the banks and the traps I play mostly defense and wait for him to make a mistake.

But all of a sudden I now notice that the patience and thought that is required in 1P has really helped my 9-ball game. Everything just seems so much easier now.

I must be delusional.

I've been suggesting to 9-Ballers and 8-Ballers for years that 1-Pocket will help their game and I mostly got laughed at --- until they tried..... Amazing, ain't it... :)

Grady's tapes are really worth the price, mine have paid for themselves many times over in lap dances. :)

I have his 16 steps and a video of Grady playing Wade Crane one pocket - now when do I get the lap dance?

Theres a guy in town that I play 9b with that beats me pretty good most of the time. But when we play 1p I just destroy him.

9 ball players will mostly jump on any $$$ game they can get. And most of the time they play pretty aggressivly at 1p. Even if your less of a shot maker than the opponent by stepping up the defence you will win more games of 1p than not against a much better 9b player.

And you will see alot more safties, banks, kicks, combos, caroms

And also you will just instinctively stary using the two corner pockets down by the rack where the 9b sits most of the time.

1p............ Great game

One pocket will help all of your games. I've never understood players that say, "sorry, I only play nine ball...". One pocket will help you look at more complex shots, multiple rail kicks/banks, and ultimately - cue ball control with precision.

I play quite a bit of nine ball as well, and it's funny how several "one pocket" shots have come up. You will start to notice that you will jump up to the table for a short rail bank, when most people that only play nine ball will be confused as what to do.

Patience is a virtue. :D

If you wanna learn even more, start playing three cushion.

Great stuff. As for the lap dances, one of my regular opponents ( sort of a personal Bonsai) doesn’t do well gambling for $$ (with a couple of Jagermeisters he will bet his last dime every time) so I only play him for lap dances from a local dancer/pool player. Nobody gets hurt and we do our part in supporting local industry. It got to the point one day where he couldn’t win at anything one pocket, 8 ball, left handed 8 ball ...anything. We went around the corner to the strip bar so he could pay up ( Denise loves to see us when we have been playing pool). After we returned to the pool hall he was pretty trashed and not in a very good mood. This guy walks in that goes from bar to bar selling roses so I bought one, walked over to my opponent and handed the rose to him. He looked at me with annoyance and said “What is this!” I said to him “ I’ve been F***ing you all day I might as well buy you a rose.” To this day occasionally whenever I really get he best of him I’ll have a rose delivered to him. Select your bonsai carefully and with proper care should provide years of free lap dances.

Not to stray from the original topic, but Straight pool has helped a lot with my 9 ball game as well. I think more so with the patience and cue ball speed + position. I actually now prefer straight pool over 9 ball. There aren't may people in my local pool hall that play 1 Pocket, so I've never had the pleasure of trying the game out. Happy Holidays to all!
