All the pro are training in "ONE SIDE BILLIARD". that's in Mabini street,Malate (The building just right in front of Hyatt Hotel) e.g. Efren, Alex, Chamat, Alcano, Gandy etc. The place is open daily - 5pm till close.
Just a block away from LA cafe.

Big action is happening there. Some U$20,000 betting, I hear will take place in the next few days between Philppine and Taiwan Player (Taiwan - Sponsored by an Arab country - dont know which).

I heard there was a new pool hall in malate, damn 1 block from LA Cafe, grrr!

I got an email from an IPT player, seems most think it was a KT scam now, and apparently orculla beat busta 25-20 for a large amount, think it was about $10,000.

If either Orculla, Manalo or Efren aren't in the final I shall eat my hat! <-- my "hot" tip lol

A lot of matches going on in there. Alex P. played Corteza the other night for $5k race to 30 and at one time was down 28-22. They ended up hillhill with Alex winning. Last night it was Alex and Gallego for $2k.

There are other matches going in all nine tables at OneSide and a lot more waiting in the wings but am just too tired to hang around after being in the Qualifiers for 5 whole days. Other matches noted were Rodney M against Roberto Gomez, Jeff deLuna against a European(getting the wild 8) for $6k.

Orcullo will be playing Yang tonight for $20k. I'll try to take pics of the place and get details of the matches. For now I'l just work in the shop and slow-down a bit. It's just CRAZY here!!!!

The european is Darren Appleton. FYI Jeff won 30-28. Darren came back from 22-28 down and tied at 28 but came out dry on the break. Jeff broke and ran out after winning that rack.

Young Filipino players

Oh boy, if Darren Appleton who has done very well in the IPT tournaments can be beaten by a virtual unknown (outside of the Philippines), then this young generation of Filipino players can spring a few surprises in the upcoming WPC. They seem to be hungry and not afraid of anybody because they have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

I am willing to make a prediction that after this WPC, some more names will be added to the elite list of Philippine pool superstars like Efren, Busta, Manalo, Orcollo and Pagulayan. Once they eventually get visas and find their way to the USA, we might witness another generation of the Filipino invasion.

I am very interested to watch the Yang match with Orcullo. It would be worth the trip just to watch that match. I wish I was there.:(

I watched Lee Cortenza played for money once and I was very impressed.

Thanks.

Richard

Please report the currencies of these multi-k matches. It helps us to know whether they are playing for 20,000USD or $200USD to gauge the level of sweat intensity to assign the match. Thank you. :-)

The info was incomlete, Jeff was giving Darren the wild 8! I was told too that the Efren-Darren match was for 10k PESOS or US$200 except for the Appleton DeLuna match which was US$4k.

It is surprising that almost all of the foreign player vs Filipino matches are in the US$100-200 range and the Filipinos to Filipinos are in the US$XXXX-XXXXX range! Everytime Alex plays it's always minimum $2k.

Last night, Jeff was playing Rodney M and Rodnay did a lot of sitting and watching. Alex and Lee Van was playing for US$10k and Alex was in stroke and ahead unlike te previous night's match against Gallego for $2k that he, Alex, lost. Yang failed to show on time so Dennis ended up playing Hsia at Rack N Roll for US$600. Hsia was so outclassed with a final score of 11-5!

17 year old Renemar David beat David Reljic in 10Ball in both cheap sets that they played 9-6 and 9-7.

None of the Taiwanese wants to play with Lee Van Corteza last nit .

Jeffry (Philippine player) went around hunting for Chao Fong Pang to play big $. But Chao was in his hotel Zzzzzz.....

Edwin Reyes - Tks for the good work on refinishing my cue. Excellent!!!

Jeffrey de Luna

Wow, this guy must be fearless. I wonder who his backers are that appear to have much confidence in him. Giving the wild 8 to Appleton, challenging Rodney Morris (and I assume beating him based on the previous post), seeking out Chao for a match, etc. He must have a lot of confidence in his skills.

In another article, Efren Reyes mentioned a certain Roberto Gomez who he thinks will go far in the WPC. There are simply a lot of unknown players in the Philippines who can upset the more recognizable names.

Why did Yang not show up for his $20,000 match with Orcullo? Did he chicken out? Only Hsia was brave enough to face Orcullo and the latter apparently did not have a lot of trouble disposing of him.

Does that mean that they don't need Reyes and co. to take care of those foreigners? Those young unknowns can tackle them down no sweat? Scary.

Well, after this tournament, I am willing to bet that a couple of young guns will not be unknown anymore. Even after Efren and Busta retires, the Philippines will still be a force to reckon with. With 21 players in the WPC, I predict the champion will be a Filipino. Look out for the young guns. They appear to be hungry, fearless and dangerous.

Jeffry didn't do well in the Bali Open couple of months ago. I think it was his first tournament abroad. But I think he will do well in his home ground. He will be representing Philippine next month in Qatar, Doha for the 2006 Asian Game.

Lee is really good playing for money, me and Kuo experienced it first hand in the US Open unfortunately.:)

He is a great potter, with a nice rhythm, great cue ball control, and displayed big heart for the big cash.

Thank you guys for the updates, I wish I was there.

Johnny, will you go to Japan after this, I will be there.:)

Jeff "Bata" de Luna has one monster of a break and is only 22 years old!! I heard he broke two Predator BKs before. He's also called "Bata" because he is willing to make difficult and nearly impossible shots like Bata Reyes. I remember watching him in the 2004 Phil 9-Ball Open. I think it was his first time playing a televised match.

Luckless Alcano gets it flush on the chinwice

Inquirer
Last updated 05:24am (Mla time) 11/05/2006

Published on page A19 of the November 5, 2006 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer

IT was a scene straight out of a Hollywood movie.

In one corner of a billiard hall, a Taiwanese player was checking his winnings, as if making sure that no part of his P150,000 winning was skimmed off.

In another, a deal-maker was trying to pair off pool sharks in an elite and high-stakes money game but no one seemed to agree on his match-ups.

It was the eve of the World Pool Championships, and none of the world-class players who stole off from their hotel rooms was in the mood for rest.

One of them, local bet Ronnie Alcano, was in no mood for anything at all.

The most feared rotation players in the country could only watch as Taiwanese Yang Ching-shun counted the crisp bills he won under the parlor o Gambling?sign.

The lanky 34-year-old Alcano battled Yang in a tight contest that went ill-hill?and blinked first in the staring match, 15-14.

The former AZBilliards rookie of the year watched his bad luck spill over to the start of the World Pool Championships, bowing to little-known Luong Chi Dung of Vietnam, 7-8, in the group stages.

t been tough,?said Alcano in Filipino. e been having bad luck since [Friday].?

It was a night billiards fans would have enjoyed being a part of.

While Alcano was getting licked, reigning world champion Wu Chia-ching and two-time world titlist Chao Fong-pang were fine-tuning their pocketing in another table.

When the resident match-maker of the tried to cook up other matches, no one seemed to bite, although the pool aces milled around waiting for whatever game would ensue.

Mike Takayama, an emerging force in local billiards, refused to play against Kuo Po-cheng, runner-up to Wu last year.

Chao also said no when pitted against Jharome Pe鎙, a wildcard qualifier in the event this year.

It looked to be a long night for the cue artists and the deal-maker.

When it looked like nobodyspecially the Taiwaneseas going home until a money match was set, a familiar figure emerged from the stairs with his pregnant wife and four-year-old son.

It was Dennis obocop?Orcollo, the undisputed money game king in the country.

In a snap of a finger, the Taiwanese decided it was time to rest, packed up their bags and left.

maybe because they think that Orcullo is the best money player in the Philippines today? Yang did not show up for a $20,000 match with Orcullo so Dennis settled instead for a $600 game against Hsia whom he (Dennis) did not have any problem beating. According to the matchroom website, there was an Orcullo vs Chao game for $10,000 last night. No results posted though.
