Only Trouble Is, Gee Whiz ...

Dear Gentle Readers,

It’s not for nothing that Efren and Alex are - - arguably - - the most popular players in America.

Talent? Of course. But more than that, demeanor. Those boys look like they’re having fun. Having a grand ole time. Doing what they love and making some bank doing it.

Contrast those two smiling, self-deprecating, happy players with most of the Easter Island, stone-faced visages of so many others in the game.

Sure, I get it. Game day, game face. Serious business at stake. But … but … grimness doesn’t win games. Does it?

In a sport that is audience-challenged, personality can make a difference.

Alas, dourness isn’t limited to the boys. My favorite girl is Jasmin because we bear a slight physical resemblance, each of us has a personal trainer, and I admire her game.

Yet, when competing, Jasmin has a perpetually downturned mouth, a solemn countenance that clouds the sun.

Facile sociology is my life,

Sunny

P. S. What brought this to mind was catching a few minutes of the Freezer playing in an 8-ball tourney. He was, uncharacteristically, laughing and joking around with his opponents.

Refreshing.

Scott's demeanor tends to be a dichotomy. Jovial and warm ,or bitter and resentfull.
Sunnyone have you ever seen yourself play? How is your table decorum?
Don't be afraid start another thread as you seldom return to what you start.

That's what this thread is all about, the rest is "sauce"!:p

Good post, sunnyone. I agree with your assessment, but to an extent.

The Kaiser for one is arguably the most stoic-faced player on the planet -
very little personality at the table, YET he is popular or shall I say, at the least, very likeable.
Why? I will answer that real soon.

I feel that enjoyment can be projected to spectators, which can in turn make
someone popular. I think popularity is related to that concept but there is also
MORE to it.....

Watch any player's reaction to unfavorable circumstances, e.g. misses or losing a match.
How do they take it?

A player's reaction to such situations is a key in determining how
spectators view a player (in any sport). Efren (very humble), Kaiser (very calm), Alex (laughs), Earl (no comment).

Now there are other factors that contribute to a spectator's perception of a player, but certainly, for the most part, popular players do have fun at the table, and part of how they show that is by taking unfortunate circumstance in stride.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, playing pool reveals ones true character.

And the unfortunate truth is most people kind of suck...

Well, as was mentioned already, MiscueBlues,
it's not just playing pool itself that reveals one's true character, but how a player conducts him/herself and reacts to unfortunate
situations.

I know what you meant I just wanted to you be thorough.

Take care.

have you seen...

....2 faces that also come to mind are of the Striking Viking and the Black Widow as they are down and about to shoot............they look kinda mean.....

Absolutely. It's all part of the game. Some people so obviously care just about beating the other guy at all costs, or about getting attention from others, or worst of all they only care about the money and will stoop pretty damn low to get it. Losers, the lot them. They have no idea what winning is...
