Open Invitations

Over the years people have always had open invitations to play.
For example; So and so says I'll play anybody in the world for such and such. Can anyone elaborate on some of these open invitations, past and present.

The only one I personally know was 100% legit was Larry Nevel opened a challenge for any American to come play him in Easley, SC for at least a few thousand. The only person to show up was Archer and he beat Larry pretty good.

I've heard before that Rodney Morris opened a challenge for anyone to play him in Hawaii. I've also heard that Dennis Hatch opened a challenge for any American to play him. I don't know if either of these are true, just stuff I've heard.

I'm sure there are many, many more but these are all I know or have heard of myself.

Could be wrong but I thought Donnie Mills had an invitation for any American except for svb, 10 ball in Tampa.

I'll tell you what soco, you have to be careful when dealing with those 'open invitations'.
My third wife once asked me to kiss her ass, and I said that it looked too much like her face, and the next thing I remember was waking up in the hospital with one eye swollen shut and a concussion. :)

Years ago, a player named Gene Skinner had an open challenge to any player to participate in a pool decathlon of sorts. Pick any 5 out of the rule book - and Skinner got to choose 5 games. The first guy to get to 6 got the stake - which was a minimum of $25,000 for you - and Skinner would put up $25,000 of his own - for a total purse of $50,000. I don't believe that Skinner had any takers for this bet, which was like an underground challenge for many years.
