Opinion needed - GC III vs. GC IV

Looking for a table, recently I came across a GC IV that came out of a pool room, in decent shape but to make it look nicer for home use was going to refinish the wood on the aprons and other lower pieces and especially the castings, some were discolored or corroded, almost like the clear coat wore off. Looking into powder coating or electroplating options for those. Structurally things are good, rubber replaced a few years ago, should play great once setup.

Was ready to pull the trigger, then found out about a GC III locally that's been in storage for a few years from an older pool room that was moved and remodeled. Curiously the rails/aprons/castings are in slightly better shape, from what I could see (parts for 9 tables were stacked in a small garage), rubber was new around 2005/2006 but they've been in storage for a few years here in Florida, not sure how humidity etc. would affect anything.

So - $800 for the GC III, probably won't need refinishing, and local delivery. $1200 for the GC IV, will spend another $600 - $700 for refinishing but will look pretty close to brand new when done, plus a little extra for delivery since it's a few hours away. Is the IV that much better as a base where it's worth it just to spend the extra money and make it look nice and eventually have the rails done by Mark Gregory, or save the money and get the III and go from there the same way?

Thanks,
Scott

Anyone have any advice? Would like to make my decision this week. Tough when just looking at pieces in storage...

Thanks!

GC III-save the money

I would save the money and go with the GC III. If RKC says either will work, then take his word for it. I have a GC III that RKC worked on and it's an amazing table. Mark G will do a great job and you'll be very happy, plus have quite a bit more cash in your pocket. I don't see any reason to go with a table that needs quite a bit of refinishing work, you probably won't get that money back if you ever try to sell it. Hope this info helps.

Thanks guys, that does help! Just tough to picture the finished product when in stacks of pieces, and have heard here and elsewhere about things to watch out for with GC III's. If it saves me a grand would be worth it!

As I've said before, there's no such thing as a bad Gold Crown, only ones that have been abused.
